"Mr. Voss says you went onto his property, attempted to take his vehicle, and threatened him," Hanley said.

"I did not take his key or touch his car," Adrian replied. "He offered me the key and suggested I move the vehicle for money. I declined and asked him to move it himself. There are exterior cameras on both houses, and my camera shows when I came back inside. I'm asking you to review the complete footage."

"We'll get to the cameras," Hanley said.

"It's the easiest way to establish what happened," Adrian answered. "I also have photographs showing the obstruction and a preservation request sent to Mr. Voss. You can examine those now if you wish."

Grant stepped closer to the edge of Adrian's driveway. "He had the key in his hand, Brett," he said. "My security contractor saw it. He's got a written report."

Colin lifted the tablet almost automatically. The sudden motion drew Price's attention, and he saw Colin's hesitation before Hanley reached for the device. The lieutenant scanned the first lines of the report, nodded, and handed it back. He spent too little time reading to understand the chronology, but he treated the existence of a written account as evidence that the allegation was well founded.

"Sir, step down off the porch," Hanley said to Adrian.

Adrian descended the steps. "I'm happy to cooperate. My identification is in my inside jacket pocket, and I have proof of residence if you want to see it. I'd prefer to explain each movement before I reach for anything."

"Turn around," Hanley ordered.

Adrian looked at him. "Am I being detained? If so, what is the specific basis?"

"Turn around first, and we'll sort that out."

The veteran officer shifted toward Adrian's right side, taking a position he apparently believed would help control the encounter. Price remained several paces away where he could observe both Grant and Adrian. The sports car continued to block the driveway in plain view, and no one had made any move to examine it or arrange for its owner to park it elsewhere. An argument that began because Adrian could not enter his property had somehow become an investigation of whether he had a right to remain on it.

"Lieutenant," Adrian said, "I'm not refusing a reasonable request. I'd like my identity checked and the evidence reviewed before you make an arrest decision."

"I didn't say anything about an arrest," Hanley replied. "Turn around."

Adrian saw that Hanley's patience had been replaced by the impatience of a man who felt his control being questioned. It was a dangerous place for a simple exchange to reach, and Adrian knew that any abrupt movement could make matters worse. He turned slowly, keeping his hands visible, and let the officers position themselves behind him. He did not tell them who he was yet; he still hoped the encounter could be handled by normal procedures applied normally.
