The first handcuff closed around his right wrist. The second clicked against his left, a sound he knew from years of making arrests and reviewing them afterward. His shoulders settled into the restrained posture, and he remained motionless as the veteran officer checked the cuffs. Adrian felt a quiet disbelief that had nothing to do with his personal rank and everything to do with the absence of a fact supporting the restraint.

"What offense do you believe I've committed?" he asked.

Hanley did not provide a clear answer. "We're investigating a complaint. You're going to cooperate while we do that."

"I have been cooperating," Adrian said. "You have my name available, my documents available, and camera footage available. None of that has been examined."

The veteran officer moved him toward a patrol car near the front steps. The path required a turn around a low brick wall separating the porch from the walkway. As Adrian passed, the edge of the brick caught the fabric of his left sleeve near his restrained wrist. A sharp scrape followed, and he flinched despite himself when the cuff pressed into the injured skin.

"Careful," Adrian said, more sharply than he intended. "My wrist caught the wall."

The veteran officer did not stop immediately. Adrian took two more steps, feeling a warm dampness spread beneath the fabric. The injury was not severe, but he could tell the cut was bleeding, and the position of his hands made it impossible to examine. A few feet away, Nolan Price saw the change in the sleeve and glanced toward his lieutenant.

"Lieutenant," Price began, "his wrist—"

"We've got him," Hanley said without turning. "Make sure the scene stays clear."

Price fell silent. He would remember that interruption long after the evening, because it marked the moment when he recognized a problem and allowed a superior's tone to determine whether he acted. The injured man's sleeve was becoming visibly stained. Grant stood nearby with his arms crossed, watching with the satisfaction of someone seeing a favor delivered as promised.

Across the street, Serena held her phone at chest height and recorded the unfolding detention. Her earlier video had been intended to frame Adrian as an intimidating stranger, but this scene appeared to confirm that the authorities took the complaint seriously. She moved a little closer to the railing for a clearer view, then adjusted the angle so Grant and the officers occupied the center of the frame. The black sports car remained mostly outside her shot.

"I told him," Grant said, making sure his words carried. "I told him exactly what would happen if he came over here causing problems."

Adrian stopped beside the patrol car. "Lieutenant, I need you to listen to me carefully. My name is Adrian James Mercer. I am the police commissioner of Bellhaven, and my appointment took effect eleven days ago. My identification is in my inside jacket pocket. Contact your command division and verify it before transporting me anywhere."
