At 11:14, he wrote back. I'm safe. I'm at Daniel's. I need space. Please don't come here tonight.

Daniel was his older brother, a high school science teacher who lived in North Cape May with his wife and two daughters. I stared at the message and typed that Nolan was embarrassing us by involving his family. Then I erased it. I typed that we had never gone to bed angry before, although we had done exactly that more times than I cared to count. I finally sent, Okay, but you need to know it meant nothing. He did not answer. In the dark upstairs bedroom, I lay on his side of the bed because it smelled faintly of cedar soap and clean laundry. I mistook the ache in my chest for proof of love. It was partly fear of losing the dependable life I had never believed I could lose.

At 7:06 the next morning my phone began vibrating against the nightstand. There were three calls from friends, two messages from women I barely knew, and a link from a former coworker accompanied by a single sentence: Brielle, please tell me this is not real. I opened it. The video started with Maren panning across the food and the backyard while somebody sang along to the music. My father waved from the grill. Tessa ducked out of the shot, laughing. Then the camera found Julian and me, and the recording became something else entirely.

I watched myself move toward him. I watched the kiss, Nolan's expression, and the horrible little laugh I had barely remembered making. The sound on Maren's phone caught every word of my answer. There I was, dressed for a summer cookout, telling the person who had built a life with me that he could file for divorce. The caption was an awkward attempt at humor about old flames and family drama. Maren had uploaded it as a public reel before she realized what she had captured. By morning, people had downloaded it, sent it to group chats, and reposted it with their own captions.

I called Maren immediately. She answered on the first ring and sounded like she had been crying. "I deleted it," she said before I could speak. "I deleted it as soon as Tessa told me what happened. But somebody saved it." I demanded to know why she had been recording in the first place. She reminded me that everyone had known she was filming food and family clips, that I had looked straight at the phone, and that I had waved toward it before the kiss. Her answer made me furious because it left me with the one thing I did not want: responsibility.
