Thorn had reached a crossroads. He could order a complete, honest review of Harlan's encounter, release Dez, and accept the fallout. Or he could help construct a reason the officer should never have needed.
Thorn chose the second option, although he disguised it from himself as careful investigation. He asked whether a canine unit was available and told Harlan to return to the house for a supposed follow-up. The order came before anyone had explained the legal basis for another entry onto the property. Dez watched the decision take shape and understood that the captain had decided to protect a report instead of a person.
"Do not send another officer onto my property without lawful authority," Dez said. Thorn replied that he had grounds to investigate suspected narcotics. Dez asked him to identify those grounds apart from an odor Harlan had only just remembered. Thorn's face reddened.
"You are not going to direct this department," he said. Dez stepped back from the desk. "Then write down what you're directing it to do, Captain. I want a record of this conversation." Harlan gave a small, contemptuous laugh and left with an order to contact the canine handler.
In the parking lot, Harlan paused beside his cruiser. He had expected Thorn to cover him without asking questions, and the captain's hesitation left him feeling cornered. Harlan had seen officers saved before by a late-arriving claim of contraband, a story told after the fact but accepted because the suspect lacked the resources to contest it. He had learned more about those methods from the station culture than from any formal instruction. Inside his pocket was a small packet of confiscated marijuana that should have been logged into evidence weeks earlier. He touched the pocket and told himself he was protecting a legitimate arrest.
At 422 Maple Ridge, the street was no longer quiet. Tyler had sent his video to a friend with the instruction to keep a copy in case someone demanded that he delete it. The friend posted a short clip, and Tyler decided to upload the full unedited recording as well. His caption was plain: "Police arrest our new neighbor while he is fixing his own car. His ID matches the house." He resisted a friend's suggestion to add dramatic music because he thought people should hear the officer's voice, not a soundtrack.
