"The audit results are preliminary but conclusive," Marcus said, his voice steady and professional. "Ms. Vanessa Hullbrook has used her position as public-relations director to actively promote discriminatory technology while personally benefiting from the police relationships those contracts created."
He placed a printed email on the table. "This message from Ms. Hullbrook to Officer Bellamy's captain was sent two weeks before my incident. She recommended expanding the SafeWatch pilot program to include enhanced response protocols for upscale residential communities. She specifically suggested that verified residents receive priority credibility when reporting suspicious persons."
Eleanor's voice was ice cold. "Vanessa was conducting legitimate business outreach."
"She was designing a system to weaponize her own biases," Marcus interrupted. "And when I moved into Ashborne Crest, she used that exact system against me."
Nora opened her laptop and turned it toward the board. "Ms. Hullbrook also used company resources to coordinate with neighborhood associations in three counties. She provided them with direct contact information for officers who use Hullbrook technology. She essentially created a network where wealthy residents could bypass normal police procedures."
Marcus stood and walked to the window, looking down at the parking lot where Vanessa's white BMW sat in its reserved executive space. "Based on these findings, I'm recommending immediate suspension of Ms. Vanessa Hullbrook pending a full investigation into misconduct, misuse of company influence, and actions that have caused severe reputational harm to Hullbrook Dynamics."
The silence stretched for nearly a minute. Patricia Drummond finally spoke.
"Mr. Ellison, Vanessa has been with the company for eight years. Her performance reviews have always been excellent."
"Her performance reviews don't mention that she's been using company influence to ensure police treat her complaints as more credible than evidence," Marcus replied without turning around. "They don't mention that she's created a system where people who look like me are automatically suspect in neighborhoods where we have every right to be."
Arthur stopped pacing. "This is about one misunderstanding in a driveway."
"No." Marcus turned back to face the board. "This is about a pattern of behavior that turned a misunderstanding into a humiliation. Ms. Hullbrook didn't just call the police. She activated a system designed to ensure they would believe her without question."
Eleanor's hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles had turned white. "You're asking us to suspend my daughter based on your interpretation of-"
"I'm not asking," Marcus said quietly. "I own 51% of this company. I'm informing you of my decision."
The vote was called. Five board members voted yes, reluctantly. Eleanor and Arthur abstained. The motion passed.
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa stood in the executive elevator as Security Officer Williams waited patiently beside her. Her personal items had been packed into a small cardboard box that she clutched against her chest. Her access badge had been deactivated. Her company email was suspended. Her parking space would be reassigned by morning.
"This isn't over," she said to Marcus as the elevator doors began to close.
Marcus watched the numbers descend until they reached the ground floor. Through the window, he saw Vanessa storm across the parking lot, her heels clicking angrily on the concrete. She threw the box into her BMW and sat behind the wheel for several minutes, her phone pressed against her ear.
Outside the Hullbrook Dynamics building, Vanessa's hands shook as she dialed Bellamy's number. "Grant, I need you to listen to me," she said when he answered. "Marcus threatened me after the board meeting. He cornered me in the hallway and said I would regret crossing him."
Bellamy's voice was cautious. "Vanessa, you need to be very careful about making statements like that. If you're filing a complaint-"
"I'm not filing anything yet," she interrupted. "I'm telling you what happened. He used his position to intimidate me. He made it clear that he would use his power to destroy me if I didn't stay quiet."
There was a long pause. "Vanessa, after what happened in the driveway, any complaint you make is going to be scrutinized very carefully."
"Grant, remember who helped your department get those technology contracts?" she said, her voice hardening. "Remember who made sure your captain got invited to those security conferences? Remember who's been protecting your career for the last three years?"
