The elevator opened into the executive suite. Vanessa walked past her assistant's empty desk and pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the main boardroom.

Eleanor Hullbrook sat at the head of the long mahogany table, her silver hair pulled back in a perfect chignon. Her cream-colored suit was immaculate, but her usually steady hands trembled slightly as she turned pages in a thick folder.

Arthur Hullbrook stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his broad shoulders tense beneath his navy suit jacket. He stared out at the city skyline with the expression of a man watching storm clouds gather.

Three other board members sat around the table: Patricia Drummond from legal, Robert Kellison from operations, and David Sterling from finance. Their faces were pale with concern.

"Mother, what's this about?" Vanessa asked as she took her usual seat. "I had to leave an important community meeting."

"Sit down and be quiet," Arthur said without turning from the window. His voice carried a harshness that made Vanessa's stomach clench.

Eleanor looked up from her folder with tired eyes. "We have a problem, Vanessa. A very serious problem."

"What kind of problem?"

"The majority investor," Patricia Drummond said carefully. "The one who bought 51% of the company through the emergency restructuring deal. He's coming today."

Vanessa relaxed slightly. This was business. This was something she understood.

"So we charm him, show him the quarterly projections, make him feel important. Rich men are all the same. They want respect and deference. We give him both, and he leaves us alone to run the company."

Arthur turned from the window with a bitter laugh. "You think this is some soft Wall Street type who just wants dividend checks? This investor has been asking very specific questions, Vanessa. Questions about our public-safety contracts. Questions about police-department relationships. Questions about discrimination complaints."

"So what?" Vanessa shrugged. "We have excellent relationships with law enforcement. That's good for business."

Eleanor's hands stilled on the folder. "He specifically requested records of all internal communications involving police interactions with residents in gated communities."

A cold finger of unease touched Vanessa's spine, but she pushed it away. "That's oddly specific, but it's probably just due diligence. Rich investors always want to see everything before they make a major decision."

The boardroom door opened and Eleanor's assistant stepped inside. "Ma'am, your four o'clock appointment is here."

Eleanor nodded stiffly. "Send them in."

Vanessa turned toward the door, expecting to see some hedge-fund manager in an expensive suit.

Instead, Marcus Ellison walked into the boardroom wearing a charcoal-gray suit and carrying a leather briefcase. Behind him followed a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair pulled back in a professional bun.

The blood drained from Vanessa's face. Her mouth opened and closed without sound.

Marcus took the seat directly across from her with calm confidence. The woman sat beside him and opened her own briefcase with practiced efficiency.

"Good afternoon," Marcus said in the same steady voice Vanessa remembered from the driveway. "I'm Marcus Ellison, majority owner of Hullbrook Dynamics. This is Nora Whitfield, my legal counsel and corporate adviser."
