Darius studied the man across from him. Fear had carved deep lines around Mercer's eyes.

"Officer, what did you swear to uphold when you took this badge?"

"Sir?"

"The oath. What did you promise?"

Mercer swallowed hard. "To serve and protect. To uphold the law fairly."

"Does lying in an official investigation serve anyone?"

"No, sir."

"Does protecting a false accusation uphold fair law enforcement?"

"No, sir." Mercer's voice cracked. "But Chief, I've got kids. College tuition coming up."

"Then you should have thought about your family before you let donor pressure influence your judgment."

Darius's tone remained steady, but his words hit like hammer blows.

"Officer Mercer, I won't tell you what to say. But I will tell you this: the truth has a way of coming out regardless. Body cameras don't lie. Dispatch recordings don't change their story. Evidence doesn't protect anyone who betrays it."

Mercer stood unsteadily. "Yes, sir."

After he left, Darius began clearing his desk. Personal items went into a cardboard box: a photo of his father in his factory uniform, a commendation plaque from his previous department, and the brass pen set his officers had given him at his swearing-in ceremony.

The intercom buzzed. "Chief, Councilman Hail is here to see you."

Gordon entered looking like a man attending a funeral he had helped arrange. His expensive suit was perfectly pressed, but his confidence had vanished.

"Darius, I'm sorry it came to this."

"Are you?"

Gordon closed the door and lowered his voice. "Look, this has gotten out of hand. That video changes everything. Public perception, political pressure. It's too much to overcome."

"Public perception of what? A police chief explaining legal consequences to someone who filed a false report?"

"That's not how it looks on camera."

Darius continued packing. "How it looks to who? Your donor?"

"Darius, please resign quietly. Take a settlement package. Everyone moves on with dignity intact."

"Whose dignity?"

Gordon's frustration broke through. "Yours, mine, the department's. This hearing will drag everyone through the mud. Your career will be destroyed either way, but resignation lets you control the narrative."

Darius picked up his nameplate, CHIEF DARIUS HOLLOWAY, and wrapped it carefully in tissue paper.
