What actually happened was quieter.

Sully told everyone to leave it alone.

“That truck is evidence now.”

Leo looked at him.

“You could wreck it.”

“Yep.”

“Why don’t you?”

Sully looked toward Hank.

“Because then he gets to talk about us instead of what he did.”

Leo considered that.

Sully continued:

“Never hand a guilty man a better story.”

That stayed with Leo almost as long as anything Patrick had taught him.

The ambulance doors opened.

Leo climbed inside.

Before they closed, Sully approached.

He held out the Zippo.

Again.

Leo took it.

“I really get to keep it?”

Sully frowned.

“Thought we settled this.”

“I just keep losing it.”

“Then quit hanging around thieves.”

Leo smiled despite himself.

Sully’s expression softened.

“You okay?”

“No.”

The honesty surprised both of them.

Sully nodded.

“Better answer.”

Leo looked toward the motorcycles.

“Why are there 247 of you?”

“Regional ride.”

“All for you?”

“Some.”

Sully leaned against the ambulance.

“We were heading through this part of Arizona anyway.”

“You just happened to come here?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Sully looked toward the abandoned station.

“Got my bike fixed properly in Phoenix.”

Leo frowned.

“Properly?”

“Don’t look offended.”

“My repair worked.”

“For forty miles.”

“That’s what temporary means.”

Sully smiled.

“Mechanic asked who patched it.”

“What’d you say?”

“A starving kid living in a dead gas station.”

Leo looked away.

Sully continued.
