He began keeping two notebooks. One contained facts about the legal case, dates, names, and events he remembered, without embellishment. The other contained diagrams, questions about engines, notes from Rosa's shop, and sentences from his father's memory. On difficult days he wrote one thing he had learned, even if it was as small as the proper name for a component or a mistake he now understood. The pages gradually became evidence to himself that his life was moving forward in ways Hank could not measure.

One afternoon, Nora arranged a supervised video call with Miguel, who was temporarily living in a separate safe placement. Leo had been waiting for the call so long that when the image appeared, he could barely speak. Miguel looked thinner than he remembered, and his hair had been cut shorter, but his eyes were bright. He lifted a hand and gave Leo the smallest wave imaginable. "You left me a note," he said.

Leo swallowed. "I did." Miguel looked down, then back at the camera. "I kept it," he said. "Even after Hank found everything else."

Leo pressed his fingers against the edge of the table. "I'm sorry I left," he whispered. Miguel shook his head. "You didn't make him the way he was. You got somebody to look at what was happening."

They were not allowed to talk about every part of the investigation, so they talked about ordinary things. Miguel had started at a new school and liked a teacher who let students keep small plants on the windowsill. Tessa was safe, although she was staying elsewhere, and Ben had been given a new backpack. Leo asked whether Miguel was still folding his socks under the pillow.

Miguel smiled for the first time. "No. They gave me a drawer, and nobody checks it."

After the call Leo sat with his hands folded in front of him until Nora asked whether he needed a moment. He nodded, and she left him alone. He had imagined that saving the other children would feel like a single enormous victory, the kind in movies when music rises and everybody gets in a car and drives away. Instead it was a small screen, a nervous wave, and the knowledge that Miguel now had a drawer he could use without fear. Leo decided the quiet improvement mattered more than the imaginary music.

At Rosa's shop, his training began to take on real structure. He learned how to make written repair estimates, how to tell a customer a job would take longer than expected, and how to accept correction without hearing it as a threat. Rosa sometimes asked him to explain a diagnosis and deliberately challenged his first answer, not because she doubted him but because she wanted him to understand why it was right. At first Leo would shrink inward and start apologizing. Gradually he learned to ask, "Which part do you want me to check again?"
