Rusty was found curled beside a large dumpster at the back of a crowded garbage collection area.

At first, the sanitation worker thought the motionless shape near the wall was an old blanket. Then the dog slowly raised his head.

His body was covered in wounds.

Large sections of fur were missing from his back, neck, and hind legs. The exposed skin looked raw and infected, while several swollen sores had already begun to bleed. His ribs and hips showed clearly beneath what remained of his dirty coat.

When rescuers approached, Rusty pressed himself closer to the dumpster. He was too weak to escape, yet too frightened to understand that the strangers were there to help him.

A bowl of food was placed several feet away.

Rusty stared at it but did not move.

Only after a rescuer stepped back did he slowly crawl forward, dragging one painful hind leg behind him. He ate while lying on the pavement because standing required more strength than he had left.

When Rusty was finally lifted onto a blanket, he released a quiet cry and buried his face against the rescuer’s arm.

At the veterinary clinic, the team discovered severe skin infections, dehydration, malnutrition, and multiple wounds across his body. One injury near his hip was especially concerning.

Then the veterinarian examined Rusty’s damaged hind leg and immediately requested emergency X-rays.

The results revealed that his condition was more serious than anyone had realized at the dumpster.

Rusty is currently receiving intensive care at a veterinary clinic after being rescued from the garbage collection area.

His examination confirmed that the extensive hair loss across his back, neck, and legs was caused by a severe skin condition complicated by bacterial infection. Several open sores contained dirt and debris, suggesting that Rusty had been sleeping outdoors in unsanitary conditions for an extended period.

The medical team carefully clipped the fur surrounding the worst areas before cleaning each wound with a sterile solution. Rusty has started antibiotics, pain medication, and treatment to control the mites responsible for much of the irritation and hair loss.

The injury near his hip required particular attention. X-rays revealed an older fracture in his left hind leg that had begun healing in the wrong position. The veterinarian believes Rusty may have been struck by a vehicle or suffered a serious fall several weeks before he was found.

Because the fracture is no longer fresh, the team is consulting an orthopedic specialist to determine whether surgery will improve his mobility. For now, Rusty is receiving strict rest and only stands with assistance for short bathroom breaks.

He was also severely dehydrated and significantly underweight when he arrived. Blood tests showed anemia and elevated inflammation levels, but thankfully, there were no signs of irreversible organ damage.

Rusty is now eating several small meals each day. At first, he would only eat when everyone left the room. He has since become comfortable enough to accept food from a veterinary technician’s hand.

His emotional recovery remains slow.

Rusty watches every movement carefully and becomes frightened when someone approaches too quickly. During wound care, he often lowers his head and trembles, but he has never attempted to bite. A staff member stays beside him throughout each procedure, speaking quietly and allowing him time to settle.

Over the past few days, Rusty has started lifting his head when his caregivers enter. He now sleeps beneath a warm blanket instead of pressing himself against the kennel wall. Yesterday, he gently rested his chin on a technician’s hand after she finished cleaning his wounds.

Rusty still has a long recovery ahead. His infections must clear before any orthopedic procedure can be considered, and it may take months for his coat to grow back.

But he is no longer lying unnoticed beside a dumpster.

For the first time in a long while, Rusty has clean bedding, regular meals, relief from his pain, and people determined to help him stand again.
