"This young woman was fired about fifteen minutes ago," Frank said. "Her offense was insisting that I be treated like a customer. Earlier, she offered a stranger coffee and asked what kind of vehicle he needed. Later, after losing her job, she offered that same stranger her last twenty dollars so he could get home."
A quiet sound passed through the crowd. Kayla looked down, embarrassed by how much of her private fear had become public. Frank noticed and lowered his voice before continuing.
"I'm sorry to put your circumstances in front of everyone, Kayla. I don't want anyone here to think you have to prove you deserve respect by telling us what you can't afford. What matters is that you treated someone with dignity when you had every reason to be afraid."
Kayla looked at him with eyes that were beginning to fill. "I didn't know who you were," she said.
"I know. That's why it mattered."
Frank turned back to Dean. "You threatened a single mother with losing her home because she wouldn't participate in the humiliation of a customer. You used her wages, her rent, and her daughter's health as leverage to keep her quiet. You will not supervise another employee here. Effective immediately, you're removed from duty, and the company will review your conduct and employment status according to policy."
Dean's face changed from shock to anger. "Mr. Hayes, I have managed this floor for eight years. One argument cannot erase everything I've done."
"It doesn't erase it," Frank said. "It makes me ask how many other arguments ended the same way when I wasn't standing there."
Pruitt swallowed. "I can have human resources begin the review this afternoon."
"You will. And it will include the complaints that appear to have been closed without investigation."
Dean tried to speak again, but the room no longer looked to him for permission. He stepped back, staring at his shoes, and Frank turned to Chad.
"Mr. Morrow, your manager appointment is withdrawn. You're being removed from customer-facing work while the company investigates your conduct, including the recording, the accusation of theft, and any prior complaints. Return the company sedan keys to Pruitt and your access badge to human resources."
Chad's hand moved instinctively toward his pocket. "You can't take my car over one misunderstanding. It's part of my compensation package."
"It was a conditional vehicle assignment for a promotion that has not occurred. Your earned wages and any commissions legally owed will be reviewed and paid according to your agreement and the law. I'm not interested in cheating you. I'm interested in ending the idea that money makes a person exempt from consequences."
