“I want to be clear about something,” Frank continued, turning to face the room now instead of just Gary. “A black belt with three stripes isn’t something a man just decides to wear one day. It’s earned through sanctioned testing in front of certified boards, documented every step of the way.” He opened the folder and held up a single page. “This is the official testing record for Tanner’s third stripe dated a Sunday in November four years ago. I have here a signed statement from Samuel Devo, a certified regional board examiner, confirming no such testing ever took place under his authority that day or any day that year involving Tanner Priestley.”

The room had gone completely silent. “I was in a hospital waiting room three counties away that entire weekend,” Frank said. “I couldn’t have administered that test either, no matter what this paperwork claims.” Gary’s face had gone pale, his composure cracking for the first time all evening. Tanner stood frozen on the mat, microphone still in his hand, searching the room for something, anything that might turn the moment back in his favor.

“This is ridiculous,” Tanner said, forcing a laugh that landed flat in the silent room. “Frank’s confused. He’s getting older. Everybody here knows that.” Frank did not flinch. “I may be old,” he said, “but my memory of forty years running an honest gym in this town isn’t the part that’s failing me tonight.”

A few council members exchanged uneasy glances. Ruth Palowski was already writing something in her notebook, her pen moving faster than usual. Mayor Coloulston leaned toward her, whispering something Joe could not hear from the back of the room, though the mayor’s expression suggested the evening had just taken a turn she had not planned for either.

Loretta Doyle watched her husband from her seat, her hands folded tightly in her lap, pride and worry fighting each other across her face in equal measure. She had told him that morning she would stand behind whatever he decided to do. She meant to keep that promise, even with her heart hammering the way it was.

Cole Priestley, standing near the side entrance in his off-duty clothes, felt something cold settle in his stomach. He had known Tanner’s belt situation was murky, in the vague way family sometimes chooses not to look too closely at each other’s business. He had not known it was quite this fabricated. He thought for the first time all week about the statement he had taken from Curtis, the one where the younger man had quietly admitted, almost as an aside, that Tanner had told him beforehand to grab Joe harder than usual. Cole had left that detail out of his official report.

He thought too about his father driving twenty minutes back to a hardware store once just to return fourteen cents that had not been his to keep. Standing there now watching his uncle’s face go pale in front of the whole town, Cole made a decision he would spend the rest of the night trying to live up to.
