I shook my head.
“What changed?”
She had no answer beyond seeing me move on.
That mattered.
I closed the door.
Tara stood outside another minute.
Then left.
After that, things became messier.
She called mutual friends.
Not all of them.
Enough.
The story she told was that I had immediately started dating Marissa as revenge.
That Marissa and I had secretly liked each other during our relationship.
That my new boundaries had been punishment.
Some friends believed her.
Others called me.
Jason was one.
“Bro.”
“Hey.”
“Tara says you’re dating Marissa to get revenge.”
“I’m dating Marissa because she asked me out and I like her.”
“She says this started before the breakup.”
“It didn’t.”
“I figured.”
“Why?”
“Because she also told me you changed the locks while she still legally lived there.”
“She had already confirmed to the landlord she relocated to Marissa’s.”
“Oh.”
“She leave that out?”
“Completely.”
“Funny how that works.”
Jason sighed.
“She’s really not doing well.”
“I know.”
“You going to talk to her?”
“No.”
“That might make it worse.”
“I am no longer responsible for stabilizing her reaction to a breakup she initiated.”
Jason became quiet.
“That sounded rehearsed.”
“Therapy podcast.”
He laughed.
I thought social drama would be the worst of it.
Then Tara called my office.
I was in a project meeting when my manager, Daniel Brooks, asked me to stay behind.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Everything okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
“I think so.”
He closed the meeting-room door.
“A woman called HR this morning saying she was your emergency contact.”
My stomach tightened.
“Tara?”
“I assume.”
“What did she say?”
“That you were having some kind of mental health crisis after a breakup and might not be safe to work.”
I stared at him.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“She is my ex-girlfriend.”
“I gathered that from HR after they checked your updated emergency contact.”
“I’m fine.”
“I figured.”
He leaned back.
“But I need to ask because once somebody raises a concern, we do not just ignore it.”
“I understand.”
I explained the breakup in the minimum detail necessary.
No gossip.
No character assassination.
Just that Tara had been struggling with boundaries and had recently appeared at my apartment early in the morning.
Daniel listened.
“Do you feel unsafe?”
“No.”
“Do you think she’ll contact work again?”
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
“Document this.”
“I will.”
“HR will document the call too.”
That changed the situation for me.
Not because I wanted to punish Tara.
Because she had crossed from private relationship drama into my employment.
I sent her one written message.
Do not contact my employer again unless there is a genuine emergency involving my health or safety. You are no longer listed as my emergency contact. Please keep future communication limited to remaining property logistics.
