I stood.

Walked to the dining room.

Returned with another envelope.

Vanessa stared.

“What’s that?”

“A copy.”

“Of what?”

“My attorney’s engagement letter.”

Her face changed.

“You hired a divorce lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“October.”

Marlene looked at me.

William did too.

Vanessa looked stunned.

“October?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been planning this for two months?”

“I’ve been understanding my options for two months.”

“You were pretending everything was normal.”

The irony was so complete nobody needed to point it out.

Vanessa heard herself.

Her face folded.

I sat again.

“I’m meeting Caroline Monday.”

“To file?”

“To begin whatever process she recommends.”

Vanessa shook her head rapidly.

“No.”

I stared.

“No?”

“We can fix this.”

That sentence arrived months too late.

She moved closer.

“Roland, please.”

I did not move.

“Desmond is over.”

William looked up.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Tell him.”

William’s expression became almost painful.

“Tell him what?”

“That Desmond and I are over.”

“I don’t know that.”

Vanessa stared.

“You spoke to him.”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

William hesitated.

Eleanor answered instead.

“He said he wants to repair his marriage.”

Vanessa went still.

I felt no satisfaction.

None.

Her face did not deserve my joy.

She whispered:

“What?”

Eleanor continued carefully.

“Allison told him to leave.”

“He is currently at one of our corporate apartments.”

“He told us this morning he wants to save his family.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not…”

She laughed once.

A broken sound.

“He said he was leaving her.”

William’s face hardened.

“I’m sure he did.”

“He said after Christmas.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Last time it was after the school year.”

Vanessa stared at her.

The implications arrived slowly.

Same promise.

Different woman.

William leaned forward.

“This is what I meant when I said my son has destroyed more than one family.”

He looked at me.

“And I helped him avoid understanding it.”

Then at Vanessa.

“But you need to understand something too.”

She looked at him.

“Being lied to by Desmond does not make what you did to Roland less of a lie.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

Marlene got up.

For a moment I thought she would comfort her daughter.

Instead, she stood several feet away.

Not cold.

Unsure.

Vanessa looked up.

“Mom.”

Marlene’s face crumpled.

“I love you.”

Vanessa reached for her.

Marlene held her hand.

Then said:

“And I am very disappointed in you.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

That sentence broke her more than anything I had said.

William checked his watch.

“We should go.”

I looked at him.
