"Can you get to Dad's workshop? I think somebody's there. Call the police if you see a break-in or anything suspicious. Don't confront anybody."
There was a pause. "What are you talking about?"
"I'll explain. Just go somewhere you can see the loading entrance and tell me what you find."
Tessa stepped closer. "Daniel, what are you doing?"
I held up one finger without looking at her. Nora was already moving on the other end of the line. I heard her turn on a light, then the jingle of keys.
"I'm fifteen minutes away," she said. "But you're in Chicago. What's going on?"
"I know where I am. Please be careful."
I ended the call and looked at Tessa. She was standing between me and the hotel door, still wearing the expression of someone trying to decide how much the other person knew. Her phone rested on the table beside the wineglass. For a fraction of a second she looked toward it, and that glance told me almost as much as Adrian's message.
"You're being dramatic," she said. "I tell you I want to end our relationship and you start making mysterious calls?"
"Move away from the door."
"Who were you calling?"
"Nora."
Her face changed. Not much, but enough. "Why would you call your sister about this?"
I slipped my phone into my pocket. "I didn't say I was calling her about us."
