He never forgot those words.

Nothing important.

The manila folder remained on David’s desk.

For nearly twenty minutes, he ignored it.

Then he left for a meeting.

Michael walked past the office carrying documents and noticed the folder still there.

He stopped.

Technically, he had no authority to access private-client records without a legitimate business purpose.

But there was a legitimate business purpose.

The customer had requested account assistance.

Michael took the folder to Sarah.

“Did you ever search this?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

She became defensive.

“I had a line.”

“You’ve had an hour.”

“So have you.”

Michael looked at her.

“He asked us to check.”

Sarah sighed.

“Fine.”

She pulled the account-reference sheet closer.

The number looked unusual.

Longer than a normal retail account.

She typed it into the standard retail platform.

No result.

“See?”

Michael looked at the screen.

“Try legacy records.”

“That system is for old institutional accounts.”

“Try it.”

Sarah rolled her eyes but logged into the archive interface.

The reference returned a restricted profile.

ACCESS LIMITED

EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED

Sarah’s expression changed.

“What is that?”

Michael leaned closer.

There was a linked relationship code.

He copied it into the internal client-management system.

The screen paused.

Then displayed a profile.

ARTHUR WILLIAM HARPER

FOUNDING SHAREHOLDER

HARPER FAMILY HOLDINGS

BOARD EMERITUS

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP FLAG

Sarah stopped breathing.

Michael scrolled.

Another line appeared.

BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP INTEREST — FRANKLIN METROPOLITAN BANCORP: 60.4%

Sarah whispered:

“No.”

Michael read it again.

Franklin Metropolitan Bank was a subsidiary of Franklin Metropolitan Bancorp.

Arthur William Harper controlled more than sixty percent of the voting shares through family trusts and holding entities.

He had founded the original bank forty-six years earlier.

Michael opened another internal page.

A photograph appeared.

Arthur.

Younger.

Wearing a suit.

Standing beside the bank’s first downtown branch on opening day.

Sarah sat back.

“Oh my God.”

Michael’s mouth went dry.

“He owns the bank.”

Sarah whispered:

“That can’t be right.”

“It’s right there.”

“Maybe it’s another Arthur.”

Michael pointed at the date of birth.

Then the address.

Then the identification number in the folder.

Same person.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“What do we do?”

Michael looked toward David’s empty office.

“We tell him.”

David returned ten minutes later with his commercial client.

Michael printed the internal ownership summary and account profile.

He waited until David sat down.

Then knocked.

David looked irritated.

“What now?”

“Sir, you need to see this.”

Mr. Davenport sat across from the desk.
