A box containing photographs of his parents.

The watch his father left him.

Everything else he could retrieve later.

At six fifteen, he booked a furnished apartment in South Congress for thirty days.

At six twenty-three, he transferred his half of the following month’s mortgage payment into our joint housing account.

Then he showered.

Changed clothes.

Came downstairs.

And helped me host the party.

I knew none of this.

I spent the first forty minutes of the party believing I had broken through some wall of insecurity.

Liam refilled drinks.

He introduced neighbors to coworkers.

He carried a tray of appetizers onto the patio.

When Julian arrived, Liam greeted him politely.

Julian and I sat together.

We talked about a restaurant opening downtown.

I laughed too loudly at something he said.

At one point, Julian touched my knee while telling a story.

It was casual.

Brief.

Probably meaningless.

I looked toward Liam anyway.

He saw me looking.

That was the moment, he told me much later, when any remaining doubt disappeared.

Because he realized the party was not simply about me wanting Julian there.

I wanted Liam to watch Julian there.

There is a difference.

Liam set down the pitcher he was carrying.

Walked upstairs.

Three minutes later, the suitcase wheels started rolling.

I followed the sound.

Now we were standing in the hallway.

“Liam, enough. Julian is just a friend. Why do you keep trying to control who I’m friends with?”

His expression barely changed.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

“I’m not controlling your choice, Jessica.”

He looked toward the living room, where Julian was still sitting on our couch.

Then back at me.

“I’m accepting it and making my own.”

My confidence disappeared.

“Liam…”

He released the handle of the suitcase.

Then he reached inside his jacket.

His hand emerged holding a white envelope.

He walked toward the kitchen.

I followed him.

Our island was covered with food, glasses, cocktail napkins, the bottle Julian had brought.

Liam moved one empty wineglass aside.

Then placed the envelope flat on the quartz.

My breath stopped.

Across the top was the name of the law firm we had used during closing.

Beneath it:

NOTICE OF ELECTION UNDER CO-OWNERSHIP AGREEMENT.

My name.

His name.

Our address.

The date.

That day.

I looked at him.

“What is this?”

“The buyout notice.”

“What?”

“I triggered the separation clause at five eleven.”

I stared at the page.

“You contacted the lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Today?”

“Yes.”

“Before the party?”

“Yes.”

My knees felt weak.

“You were planning to leave before Julian even got here?”

“No.”

That gave me a flash of hope.

Then Liam destroyed it with the next sentence.

“I was prepared to leave before he got here.”

I could hear my own breathing.

“What’s the difference?”

“I was still hoping I was wrong.”

“Wrong about what?”

“That you needed this.”

I looked toward the living room.

“What does that even mean?”

“You needed him here after I told you what it was doing to us.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You hugged him and looked over his shoulder to see if I was watching.”

Every defense I had prepared died instantly.

Liam had seen it.

Not just the hug.

The purpose of it.

I lowered my voice.

“So that’s it? Four years and a house and an engagement, and you’re walking away because I hugged someone?”
