A grand gesture.

Evidence that Caleb, dependable Caleb, forgiving Caleb, had finally decided marriage mattered more than pride.

She pulled the ribbon.

Opened the card.

Read the sentence.

Her smile disappeared.

She read it again.

Then opened the folder.

First page.

Hotel booking.

Her face changed.

Second booking.

Her mouth parted slightly.

Bank transfers.

Now her breathing changed.

Turner Strategic Ventures.

Her hand froze.

Then she reached the attorney letter.

I watched her eyes move across the page.

She looked toward the front window.

Straight at me.

That was the moment she understood.

The boxes were not what she needed to fear.

I had not spent seven days waiting.

I had spent seven days learning.

Lauren opened the front door herself.

I was standing in the living room.

She held the folder against her chest.

“What is this?”

“You read it.”

“You filed for divorce?”

“Yes.”

“Without talking to me?”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I said:

“You left to spend the night with another man.”

“I told you I needed space.”

“You told me you were going to sleep with him.”

“I was confused.”

“You were very specific for someone confused.”

Her eyes flashed.

“So that’s it? Three years and you just throw everything away?”

“No.”

“You are literally divorcing me.”

“Yes.”

“Then how can you say no?”

“Because I didn’t throw it away.”

The room went quiet.

Lauren looked toward the porch.

“You packed my entire life into boxes.”

“Not your entire life.”

“You know what I mean.”

“You told me I always forgive you.”

Her face tightened.

“I was upset.”

“No.”

I stepped closer, not aggressively.

“You were confident.”

She said nothing.

“You believed you could spend a night with Blake, maybe a week, maybe longer, and I would be waiting here when you finished deciding whether our marriage was interesting enough for you.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“It is exactly what happened.”

“You don’t know what happened.”

“I know about Manhattan.”

The blood left her face.

“What?”

“Seven weeks ago.”

She looked away.

“Atlantic City too.”

Silence.

“You told me the other night was the first time.”

“I never said that.”

The sentence was automatic.

Defensive.

Technically true.

And it destroyed whatever small possibility remained that she might meet the moment honestly.

“You’re right,” I said.

“You didn’t.”

She looked back.

“You let me believe it.”

“Caleb—”

“And fifteen thousand dollars.”

That stopped her.

Completely.

I held her gaze.

“Turner Strategic Ventures.”

Lauren’s mouth opened.

Nothing came.

“That was an investment.”

“With our money.”

“It was from the joint account.”

“That means it belonged to both of us.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

No answer.

“Before or after you decided whether Blake was exciting enough?”
