Freezing rain coated lines.

Transformers failed.

Trees came down.

I worked sixteen hours on Tuesday and almost another sixteen Wednesday.

When I came home that night, my shoulders hurt, my boots were soaked, and I had a shallow cut along one wrist where a metal edge had caught me through the glove.

I wanted food.

A shower.

Sleep.

Instead, Claire was waiting in the living room.

She had changed clothes.

Candles were burning.

Not romantic candles.

Atmosphere candles.

The kind she used when she wanted a conversation to feel spiritually significant.

"Can we talk?"

Those four words have ended many evenings.

I sat.

That was when Blake became real.

"His name is Blake Rowan."

I unlaced one boot.

"Okay."

"He's a creative consultant."

I paused.

"What does he consult creatively?"

Claire looked irritated.

"Don't."

"I'm asking."

"He works with artists and brands."

"Freelance?"

"Yes."

"How did you meet?"

"At the Kessler Gallery opening."

That had been four months earlier.

A friend named Lena had invited Claire.

I remembered because I'd been working.

"What happened?"

"We talked."

"Then?"

"We kept talking."

"Then?"

Claire's eyes filled.

"It became more."

I removed the second boot.

That was all.

No performance.

No pleading.

Maybe my calm frightened her because she suddenly began explaining.

Blake understood the parts of her she felt she had abandoned.

He cared about art.

Meaning.

Presence.

Authenticity.

He challenged her.

He listened.

He wasn't trapped in what she called "transactional thinking."

Then came the line.

"Money means nothing to him."

I looked at her.

"That's fortunate."

She frowned.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing."

"It sounded like something."

"Claire, you are telling me you're in love with another man."

"Forgive me if my tone isn't calibrated correctly."

She started crying.

"I never meant to hurt you."

I believed that.

People often don't intend the full harm of what they choose.

That doesn't make choices accidental.

"How many times?"

She looked confused.

"How many times what?"

"Have you slept with him?"

She flinched.

"I don't think details will help."

"How many?"

"Mark."

"Forget it."

I already had the answer that mattered.

More than once.

Long enough to become a relationship.

I asked if she intended to leave.

She said she didn't know.

Then she said something I would understand differently later.

"I don't want to make any sudden decisions."

At the time, I heard caution.

Later, I heard what she really meant.

She did not want to surrender one life until she knew the other would hold her.

That night, after I messaged Harris, I began protecting myself.

Not punishing Claire.

There is a difference, though I'll admit anger tried to blur it.

Harris called exactly at eight the next morning.

"Tell me everything."

I did.
