were exactly where she'd left them, but the accusation was familiar. When a conversation became uncomfortable, Chloe often found a practical detail that allowed her to reestablish herself as the injured person. I wondered how many times I'd hurried to reassure her in the past simply because a small accusation was easier to answer than a large question.

At 10:53, she told me to answer my phone because we needed to talk and I was overreacting. At 11:21, she accused me of giving her the silent treatment, as if I had disappeared during an ordinary disagreement rather than after ending the relationship and explaining what practical arrangements we still needed to make. Near midnight, another message appeared asking whether I planned to come home at all. I thought about replying with the address of the hotel and decided there was no reason to create a fresh opportunity for an argument. In the morning I would deal with the lease and the remaining belongings; at night I needed to be somewhere she wasn't.

It was well after three when the phone lit up again, and I woke just long enough to see the call before turning away. Later I would learn from the voicemail that she had returned to the bedroom, found the empty side of the closet, and finally read what I'd left on her pillow. The distinction mattered, because she had understood that I was packing long before she left, yet apparently hadn't accepted that I was truly gone. In the hours between my departure and her discovery, she had continued her evening. I didn't know what she had done during that time, and I had no intention of inventing the missing hours merely to make myself angrier.

The room had gone pale by the time I woke properly. I lay in the center of the king-sized mattress, not because I was celebrating anything, but because I had turned in my sleep and there was no one beside me to negotiate space with. For several seconds I reached automatically toward the other pillow, as though expecting the familiar warmth of Chloe's shoulder. The empty sheet answered before I could remember where I was. I sat up slowly, felt the disappointment arrive, and realized that ending something could be both necessary and miserable.

I listened to the voicemail while standing beside the window with a paper cup of hotel coffee. Chloe's voice was thick with exhaustion, and she seemed to be trying to form a sentence in a room that had suddenly become unfamiliar. "Alex, the closet is so empty," she said.

"You really left? After everything? I didn't mean... just come home. I'm sorry you misunderstood. We can fix this." The phrase that stayed with me was not her request to return but the explanation she'd chosen for why I was gone.
