"Was there someone else?" Chloe asked suddenly, her eyes moving toward the building. "Is that why you're so determined not to talk?"

I understood the question before she finished, and I almost smiled at the old habit of searching for a simpler explanation than an unmet need. I told her there was no one else behind my decision and no secret relationship I was protecting. I had met neighbors, reconnected with friends, and started taking care of myself again. None of that had caused the breakup; it was possible because the breakup had already happened.

"I thought you'd come back," she admitted. "Even after the note, I thought you'd sleep somewhere for a night and we'd have one of our talks and you'd come home." I remembered the certainty with which she'd said I had nowhere to go, and I understood for the first time how deeply that certainty had shaped our arguments. She hadn't imagined the possibility that I might accept an ending without giving her another opportunity to define the terms. I told her I had considered staying many times before that Thursday. The night she told me to leave was simply the night I stopped believing staying would change anything.

She wiped at her face again, smearing the last dark traces of mascara across her cheek. "I never meant to push you away like that," she said, and the sentence might have been true. Intent matters in a relationship, but it cannot be the only measure of what people do to one another. I had spent too many evenings explaining hurt as a misunderstanding because she hadn't meant to cause it. Standing in the rain, I found I could believe she hadn't imagined this outcome while still believing that she'd given me ample reason to leave.

"I'm sorry," she said, this time without adding anything about how I'd misunderstood. "For that night, and for the weeks before it. I treated you like you were always going to be available, and when you finally weren't, I made that your fault." I nodded because I had wanted to hear those words for a long time, and I wasn't going to punish her by pretending they meant nothing. They meant she could see at least part of what had happened, and perhaps she could use that understanding in her next relationship. They did not mean I had to be the person who helped her practice it.

I thanked her for apologizing. She seemed startled by the ordinary politeness of the reply and asked whether I forgave her. I told her I wasn't holding a plan for revenge and didn't spend my days wishing her harm, but that forgiveness and reunion were different questions. I needed distance, and I wasn't going to change that boundary because she had finally found words I had once begged to hear. She looked at me silently, as if testing whether another argument would produce a different answer.
