Those words were too large to grab because one evening felt beautiful.

Instead, she thought something quieter.

I am here.

That was enough.

Later, after cleanup, Daniel and Emily drove to the cemetery.

Christmas morning was their traditional visit, but snow was expected to become heavier before dawn, so they decided to go that evening.

Claire stood beside her car.

Emily came over.

“You’re coming.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

He looked at Emily.

“Are you sure?”

Emily nodded.

Claire swallowed.

“Okay.”

The cemetery was silent under snow.

Daniel carried the wreath.

Emily carried a white rose.

Claire carried nothing.

That felt right.

At Sarah’s headstone, Emily brushed away snow.

“Merry Christmas, Mom.”

Daniel rested his hand on the stone.

Claire stood several feet behind them.

Emily looked back.

“Come closer.”

Claire did.

Emily pointed.

“This is Claire.”

Daniel almost smiled.

As though Sarah required an introduction.

Emily continued.

“She makes bad-looking cookies.”

Claire laughed through sudden tears.

Daniel lowered his head.

“And she helped at the Christmas center.”

“And Dad likes her.”

“Emily.”

“What?”

Claire wiped her cheek.

Emily touched the stone.

“I like her too.”

Snow fell softly.

Claire looked at Sarah Carter’s name.

She felt no competition.

Only gratitude toward a woman she had never known whose choices still shaped the two people Claire loved.

She whispered:

“Thank you for them.”

Daniel heard.

He said nothing.

On the drive home, Emily fell asleep in the back seat.

Claire rode with Daniel in the pickup because her Mercedes remained at the community center.

The heater took ten minutes.

Claire shivered.

“This truck is terrible.”

“It builds character.”

“I have enough character.”

“Debatable.”

They drove slowly.

Snow moved through the headlights.

At the same stretch of road where Claire had been stranded the previous Christmas, Daniel noticed hazard lights.

A minivan.

Claire saw it too.

Daniel began slowing.

She looked at him.

“You’re stopping.”

“Probably.”

Claire smiled.

“Good.”

Daniel pulled behind the van.

Before he could open his door, Claire was already reaching for her coat.

“What are you doing?”

“Helping.”

“You don’t know anything about cars.”

“I know how to hold a flashlight.”

“That is a specialized skill.”

Claire glanced into the back seat.

Emily slept.

“I’ll stay by the truck until you say otherwise.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then smiled.

They stepped into the snow.

A young couple stood beside the minivan with two sleepy children inside.

Flat tire.

Daniel had a jack.

The minivan’s spare was usable.

Claire held the flashlight.

Badly at first.

“On the wheel.”

“I am.”

“You’re lighting my shoulder.”

“Your shoulder is extremely visible.”

“Wheel.”

Claire adjusted.

Ten minutes later, the spare was installed.

The driver tried offering Daniel money.

Daniel shook his head.

Claire laughed.

The stranger looked confused.

“What?”

Claire said:

“Nothing.”

She understood the routine now.

The family drove away.
