Senior investor.

Chairman for eleven years.

Richard Bennett’s longtime friend.

The same man who had spent months pressuring Charlotte to consider a strategic partnership with Meridian Velocity, an international automotive technology consortium.

Charles denied initiating any transfer.

His executive account, he argued, had been compromised.

Possible.

His executive assistant, Nora Keene, had delegated access to scheduling and certain board document systems.

But prototype engineering data should not have been accessible from his ordinary executive profile.

Someone had expanded privileges.

When?

Three months earlier.

Authorization came through a temporary “strategic diligence” request approved by the chairman’s office.

Natalie found the form.

Signed electronically.

Charles Wexler.

He claimed he had never seen it.

Charlotte did not accuse him publicly.

Instead, the audit committee hired independent digital forensic specialists.

Logs were preserved.

Access cards reviewed.

Emails exported under counsel.

The company notified federal authorities once evidence suggested trade-secret theft crossing state and international networks.

Charlotte hated doing it.

Not because she wanted to conceal anything.

Because she knew the moment authorities became involved, control moved outside the company.

Richard had feared exactly that twenty years earlier.

That realization made her call easier.

She refused to repeat his mistake.

The board meeting scheduled for Thursday proceeded because canceling it would alert whoever was responsible.

Charlotte entered the conference room at noon.

Charles Wexler sat at the head position customarily reserved for the chairman.

Twelve directors.

Outside counsel.

CFO.

Marcus.

The planned discussion concerned Project Aster’s delayed launch.

Charles opened sharply.

“We have now missed two technical milestones.”

Charlotte said:

“One.”

He frowned.

“The second demonstration was postponed this morning.”

“I postponed it voluntarily.”

“Because the vehicle remains unreliable.”

“No.”

“Because we are investigating internal interference.”

The room changed.

Charles looked at her.

“What?”

Charlotte placed a binder before each director.

“No devices leave this room until counsel completes preservation notices.”

Charles sat back.

“You are being dramatic.”

Natalie spoke.

“This is legal advice, Mr. Wexler.”

He looked irritated.

Marcus sat two seats away.

Then the door opened.

Evan stepped inside carrying a protective drawing tube and a thin archival folder.

Charles stared.

“Who is this?”

Charlotte answered:

“Evan Carter.”

Something moved across Charles’s face.

Very small.

But Evan saw it.

Charlotte saw him see it.

Charles recovered.

“Should that mean something?”

Evan placed the tube on the table.

“My father was Daniel Carter.”

Charles’s fingers stopped moving.

Three board members looked at one another.

One older director whispered:

“My God.”

Charlotte said:

“You remember him.”

Charles looked toward her.

“I remember the scandal.”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

Charlotte continued.

“We found Richard Bennett’s sealed engineering archive.”

Charles’s expression changed again.

That was the moment.

Not proof.

But recognition.

He knew the room existed.

Charlotte said:

“Daniel Carter did not steal Bennett technology.”

“Thomas Hail did.”

Marcus looked down.

Charles answered too quickly.

“That is an extraordinary allegation against a dead man.”

Marcus looked up.

“So is falsely blaming another one.”

Charles ignored him.

Charlotte opened the archival folder.

“My father knew.”

“He concealed Thomas Hail’s theft.”

“He allowed Daniel to take the blame because Thomas had leverage and because Richard feared financial collapse if the company disclosed the breach.”
