"Rachel, you are undermining staff authority in front of a family."
"No. I'm exercising district authority because staff authority may have been misused."
The room went quiet. HR director Simone Greene opened another file.
"Dr. Cartwright, effective immediately, Ms. Patterson is placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation. You are directed not to discuss witness testimony with her outside counsel and HR processes."
Cartwright stared.
"Paid leave?"
"Standard procedure."
"She has fifteen years here."
"Which is why due process matters."
The phrase was deliberate. Due process for Patterson. Due process that Marcus had not received before being suspended. Torres looked at Cartwright for another moment.
"You are also being placed on temporary administrative leave while we review your handling of the complaints and disciplinary action."
Marcus's eyes widened. Cartwright stood abruptly.
"You cannot be serious."
"I am."
"Over a lunch dispute?"
"Over a potential pattern of discriminatory enforcement, failure to escalate complaints, and possible retaliation against a student who raised a concern."
"This is because of social media."
"Social media made it visible. Your records made it serious."
Cartwright looked at David.
"And his rank has nothing to do with this?"
David answered before Torres could.
"It better not."
Everyone looked at him. He continued. "If this only becomes wrong because I'm a colonel, then my son hasn't won anything." Torres nodded.
"Agreed."
David gestured toward the red folder.
"The facts either support the investigation or they don't. My uniform is irrelevant to that."
Marcus watched his father's face. Something important shifted in him. The uniform had seemed like armor on the walk to school. Now David was deliberately taking it out of the argument.
The door opened again. Mrs. Bell looked in. "Superintendent, Ms. Patterson has arrived."
Torres frowned. "I instructed her not to report." Cartwright said, "I asked her to come." Every district official in the room turned toward the principal.
Cartwright realized her mistake too late.
"I believed she should have an opportunity to explain."
Greene's expression hardened. "You contacted the subject of an active review after receiving preservation instructions?"
"Before I understood the scope."
Torres rubbed one temple.
"Do not discuss the case with her. We will interview her separately with representation available."
Patterson appeared behind Mrs. Bell anyway.
"Helen?"
She took two steps into the room and stopped. Her eyes moved from Cartwright to Torres. Then the district attorney. Then David's uniform.
Then Marcus. The color left her face.
"What's happening?"
Simone Greene stood.
"Ms. Patterson, I'm Simone Greene from district HR. You are being placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. You will receive written notice explaining your rights and obligations."
