She sat in a chair with Jaylen beside her.

A paramedic unit was called because her back pain had worsened and bruising had begun to show on her arm.

Monica protested.

“I don’t need an ambulance.”

Jaylen looked at her.

“You lost a shoe during your last interaction with security.”

“That doesn’t mean I need—”

“Mama.”

She sighed.

“Fine.”

While paramedics checked her, Reginald reviewed the footage with a Hallmark attorney who had joined by secure video.

The first thirty minutes were uncomfortable.

The final ten were devastating.

Karen treating other customers warmly.

Monica standing in pain.

The laughing.

The public accusation.

The phrase “you people.”

The torn check.

The groceries hitting the floor.

Preston arriving and asking almost nothing.

“Good work.”

Ray taking Monica’s arm.

Her shoe falling off.

The protest from another customer.

Preston’s threat.

“Would you like to continue banking with us?”

Then Monica being pulled through the door.

Finally Karen wiping the counter.

Reginald paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Karen cried silently.

Preston stood behind her.

Reginald removed his glasses.

He cleaned them slowly.

Then he looked at both employees.

“I’m placing both of you on immediate administrative suspension.”

Preston’s expression changed.

“Sir.”

“Do not access any Hallmark system.”

“Mr. Cole, I understand this looks—”

“Do not characterize what it looks like.”

Reginald’s voice sharpened for the first time.

“We have video.”

Preston fell silent.

“Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, Corporate Security, and Employee Relations will review this. Your employment status will be determined through that process.”

Karen looked relieved for a fraction of a second.

She had not been fired instantly.

Then Reginald continued.

“But neither of you will work another minute in this branch today.”

Karen’s shoulders collapsed.

Jaylen watched from across the lobby.

He was angry enough to want something more immediate.

His mother noticed.

She touched his hand.

“Let them do it right.”

That stopped him.

Because Monica, after everything, was asking for process.

Not revenge.

Reginald instructed another manager from a nearby branch to take temporary control.

Then he turned to Devon.

“You recognized the name?”

“Yes, sir.”

“And the poster.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you push harder?”

Devon’s eyes lowered.

“Because Karen told me to stop. Then Mr. Holloway backed her.”

“That’s an explanation.”

Reginald waited.

“Not an excuse.”

Devon looked up.

“No, sir.”

Reginald nodded.

“Good answer.”

The paramedic asked Monica whether she wanted transport to the hospital.

She refused.

Jaylen overruled her.

Monica glared at him.

“You are forty-two years old and somehow still bossy.”

“You raised me.”

“Unfortunately.”

Despite everything, she smiled.

That smile almost broke him.

At the hospital, imaging showed no new structural injury.

The removal had aggravated her existing spinal condition and caused soft-tissue bruising to her arm.

She was released that evening with medication and strict instructions to rest.
