Her shoe slipped off.

“Wait.”

Ray kept moving.

“Please.”

He hesitated.

Preston spoke from behind them.

“Get her outside.”

So Ray did.

The woman in the waiting area finally stood.

“Hey.”

Everyone turned.

“She hasn’t done anything.”

Preston faced her.

“Ma’am, this is an internal banking matter.”

“I watched the whole thing.”

“You do not have access to the information we do.”

“You threw her groceries on the floor.”

“I did not throw anything.”

“Your employee did.”

Preston’s face cooled.

“Would you like to continue conducting business with this institution?”

The threat was subtle.

That made it worse.

The woman looked at him.

Then at Monica.

Then slowly sat down.

Monica watched her.

There was no anger in Monica’s eyes.

That almost made the woman feel worse.

Ray pushed the door open.

Monica stepped outside with one shoe.

Her bare foot touched warm pavement.

Ray released her.

“Don’t come back until management clears it.”

Monica leaned against the railing.

She could barely breathe.

Inside, Karen used a disinfectant wipe on the counter.

That act would be replayed millions of times later.

Nobody needed narration to understand it.

Monica looked through the glass.

Her vegetables remained scattered.

Her shoe sat near the velvet rope.

Half of Jaylen’s check rested upside down.

She reached for her phone.

Three missed calls.

Baby Jay.

She called.

Voicemail.

“Hey, you’ve reached Jaylen Taylor. Leave me a message.”

Monica tried to speak.

No sound came.

She hung up.

Then a text arrived.

Mama, I’m ten minutes away. Don’t leave the bank. I have a surprise.

Monica read it twice.

She almost laughed.

Then she looked up.

Across the parking lot, a three-story advertisement covered the side of the adjoining building.

Jaylen.

Navy suit.

White shirt.

Quiet smile.

RIDGEWOOD NATIONAL BANK

BUILDING YOUR FUTURE

Monica stared at her son’s photograph.

The absurdity was too complete for anger.

Inside the bank, a woman had just told her she did not belong.

Outside the bank, her son’s face was selling belonging to everyone who passed.

She waited.

Nine minutes later, a black Escalade entered the lot.

Jaylen saw her immediately.

The vehicle had barely stopped when he opened the door.

“Mama?”

Monica straightened instinctively.

Even in pain, mothers tried to look fine for their children.

Jaylen crossed the sidewalk.

His eyes dropped to her feet.

“One shoe?”

Then her face.

“Why are you crying?”

“I’m not.”

“Mama.”

Reginald Cole came around the other side of the Escalade.

He had met Monica before.

Hallmark held an annual dinner for senior executives and family members.

Jaylen avoided most corporate social events.

Monica loved that one.
