The Black Belt Humiliated His Daughter in Front of the Whole Class — Then Shoved Her Father
Chapter 2
"See? " Trent sneered, holding her there, letting her squirm for a second longer than necessary. "Pain compliance. The streets don't care if you're a little girl. " A scraping sound echoed through the room. It was loud, grating. Trent looked up.
Arthur had pushed his metal folding chair back. He stood up. The dojo went completely silent. The only sound was the hum of the ancient air conditioning unit rattling in the ceiling. Arthur placed his Styrofoam cup on the seat of the chair.
He didn't slam it. He didn't rush. He simply set it down with deliberate care. Then, he stepped off the cheap commercial carpet and onto the edge of the blue mat. He didn't take off his boots.
That detail, more than anything, seemed to infuriate Trent. The sanctity of his mats had been violated by scuffed leather and dirt. "Hey! " Trent snapped, releasing Chloe. She immediately scrambled backward, clutching her wrist against her chest, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "No shoes on the mat, buddy.
Read the sign. " Arthur ignored the sign. He ignored Trent's barking voice. He walked toward his daughter. His gait was slightly uneven, a faint, almost imperceptible stiffness in his left hip. He didn't look angry.
His face was entirely devoid of emotion. He reached Chloe. He knelt down, putting a heavy, calloused hand on her uninjured shoulder. "You okay, bug? " he asked. His voice was a low, gravelly rumble.
It wasn't loud, but it carried weight. Chloe sniffled and nodded, burying her face into his flannel shirt. "He twisted it really hard, Dad. " "I know," Arthur said. He stood up, keeping Chloe behind him. He finally looked at Trent.
"We're done for the day," Arthur said. Trent let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. He looked at the other parents, throwing his arms out wide in a theatrical display of disbelief. "Oh, we're done? " "Dad says we're done. " "Listen, pal, I'm trying to teach your kid how to survive. " If she can't handle a simple joint lock in here, what's she going to do when someone grabs her in a parking lot? "She's 13," Arthur said, his voice flat.
You're 20-something and weigh 200 pounds. You didn't teach her anything. You just hurt her to make yourself feel big. The words landed like lead weights. Several kids gasped.
A father in the third row actually winced. Trent's face flushed a deep mottled red. The veins in his thick neck bulged. His authority was being challenged in his own house, in front of his students, by a man who looked like he pumped gas for a living. Excuse me?
Trent took a heavy step forward closing the distance. He puffed his chest out trying to use his height and mass to physically overwhelm the older man. You have no idea what you're talking about, old man. I am a fourth-degree black belt. I've trained with champions.
I've fought in the cage. Arthur didn't step back. He didn't adjust his posture. He just looked at Trent the way one might look at a barking dog behind a sturdy fence. "Congratulations," Arthur said.
"Go get your bag, Chloe. " Chloe scrambled off the mat toward the cubbies by the door. Arthur turned his back on Trent to follow her. It was the ultimate insult. In Trent's world, turning your back meant you were running away. It meant you were weak.
It meant you conceded. "Hey, I wasn't finished talking to you! " Trent yelled. He reached out and shoved Arthur hard in the center of his back. It was a heavy aggressive push meant to send Arthur stumbling forward. Arthur didn't stumble.
His lead foot planted. His body absorbed the kinetic energy with frightening efficiency. He didn't fall forward. He simply rooted into the floor. The air in the room seemed to evaporate.
Arthur turned around. He didn't square up. He didn't raise his fists into a boxing guard. He didn't drop into a wide, theatrical martial arts stance. He just stood there.
But, something fundamental about the man shifted. The tired, washed-out dad in the flannel shirt vanished. The slackness left his shoulders. His chin tucked slightly. His hands rested loosely at his waist, open, relaxed, but positioned with terrifying spatial awareness.
His eyes, previously dull, were suddenly sharp, focused, and entirely dead. He wasn't looking at Trent's face anymore. He was looking at Trent's center mass, his hips, his shoulders. He was looking at Trent like a mechanic looks at an engine he's about to take apart. "Don't touch me again. " Arthur said.
The gravel in his voice was gone. It was just ice. Trent felt a sudden, instinctual spike of adrenaline, a primal warning bell ringing in the back of his brain, but his ego was too loud. The parents were watching. The kids were watching.
He couldn't back down from a guy in dad jeans. "For what? " Trent sneered, bouncing on his toes, bringing his hands up into a tight, professional kickboxing guard. "You're going to do something about it? You want to disrespect my dojo? Disrespect my teaching?
Let's go right now. Put your hands up, weekend warrior. Let's see what you got. " Arthur sighed. It was a heavy, weary sound. "I'm taking my daughter home. " Arthur said.
"Move out of my way. " "Make me. " Trent spat. Arthur took a step toward the door. It required him to pass within a foot of Trent. As Arthur moved, Trent snapped. He saw the older man entering his striking range without his hands up.
It was an invitation. Trent threw a heavy, looping right hook, aiming perfectly for Arthur's jaw. He put his hips into it, intending to knock the old man out cold, a highlight reel finish to secure his dominance forever. The punch was fast. It was powerful, but it hit empty air.
To the untrained eyes of the parents and children in the room, it happened too fast to process. It looked like a glitch in reality. Arthur didn't block the punch. Blocking is for sports. Blocking means absorbing force.
