Emily responded to each movement calmly.

Whenever Marcus created half an inch of space, she took it away.

Whenever he turned one direction, she adjusted.

He was stronger.

He was heavier.

But somehow, he was the one spending all his energy.

"Relax," Emily said quietly.

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

"You're using too much strength."

That sentence hit him harder than any takedown.

It was exactly the kind of advice Marcus often gave beginners.

Now this tiny young woman was saying it to him.

A few feet away, Jake covered a smile.

Marcus saw him.

His pride took over.

He bridged violently.

Emily floated with the movement.

He turned.

She caught his arm.

Marcus realized what was happening one second too late.

His elbow was controlled.

Her legs shifted.

He felt the beginning of an armbar.

He pulled backward.

Emily followed.

Marcus stacked forward.

She adjusted again.

The pressure increased.

He could still escape.

Maybe.

But not without risking his elbow.

His hand hovered.

For one long moment, he refused.

Then Emily looked directly at him.

There was no arrogance in her expression.

No challenge.

Just patience.

Marcus tapped.

Once.

Twice.

Emily released immediately.

She moved backward and sat on her knees.

"Good?"

Marcus rubbed his elbow.

"Yeah."

The room seemed strangely quiet.

Not completely.

Other pairs were still training.

People were breathing.

Feet moved across the mats.

But Marcus felt every set of eyes nearby.

Emily extended her hand.

He touched it.

They reset.

Two minutes remained.

Marcus could have slowed down.

He could have accepted what had happened.

He could have treated it as what it was supposed to be: training.

Instead, embarrassment turned into anger.

Marcus came forward aggressively.

Emily saw it.

So did Daniel.

"Marcus," Daniel warned.

Marcus ignored the tone.

He shot for a takedown.

Emily sprawled.

Marcus drove harder.

She turned the corner.

He lost the position.

Again.

Marcus scrambled.

Emily controlled his back.

Again.

He rolled.

She followed.

Again.

Within fifteen seconds, she had him trapped in another position.

This time, there was no submission.

She simply controlled him.

Marcus couldn't move.

That was worse.

For nearly thirty seconds, he struggled.

Emily stayed calm.

Finally, Marcus stopped.

"Are you going to do something?"

Emily's answer was simple.

"I am."

"What?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

"For you to stop fighting yourself."

Daniel looked down.

He was trying not to smile.

Marcus's face darkened.

Emily continued.

"You keep trying to win every second."

Marcus said nothing.

"This is practice."

"I know what practice is."

Emily nodded.

"Okay."

That calm answer irritated him again.

Marcus forced space and turned.

Emily let him.

Then she swept him.

Again.

The timer rang.

Round over.

Emily immediately moved backward.

"Thank you."

Marcus stayed seated.

Sweat ran down his forehead.

His chest rose and fell quickly.

Emily stood.

Marcus looked up.

"How long have you actually trained?"

Emily paused.

"Most of my life."

Marcus stared at her.

"I asked if you'd trained before."

"You asked if I trained before."

"And you said a little."

Emily smiled.

"My dad says twenty years isn't very long."

A few students laughed.

Not cruelly.

But Marcus heard it that way.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Everyone, thirty seconds. Find your next partner."

People moved away.

Marcus stood.

"Who is your dad?"

Emily looked toward Daniel.

Daniel answered.

"Thomas Carter."

Marcus's expression changed.

He knew that name.

Almost everyone who had trained seriously in Colorado grappling circles knew it.

Thomas Carter didn't post constantly online.

He didn't chase attention.

But instructors knew him.

Competitors knew him.

Marcus had attended a seminar three years earlier where the instructor had mentioned Thomas as one of the best technical grapplers he had ever trained with.

Marcus looked at Emily again.

"You're that Emily Carter?"

Emily shrugged.

"I guess."

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

"What belt is she?"

Daniel folded his arms.

"The one she's wearing."

"That's not what I asked."

Emily looked down at her purple belt.

Daniel smiled.

"She's a brown belt."

The room went quiet again.

Marcus stared.

"Then why is she wearing purple?"

Emily answered.

"Because it's old."

"That's not an answer."

"No," Daniel said. "It actually is."

Marcus shook his head.

"So this was a setup?"

Emily's expression changed for the first time.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

"A setup?"

"You knew."

Daniel nodded.

"I knew who she was."

"And you let me walk over there thinking—"

Daniel interrupted.

"Thinking what?"

Marcus stopped.

Daniel waited.

"Finish the sentence."

Marcus looked around.

Several students were listening.

He didn't want to say it.

Daniel did it for him.

"You walked over there thinking she was small, unfamiliar, and probably easy."

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"I said I'd take it easy."

"Yes. You did."

Marcus looked at Emily.

She wasn't enjoying the moment.

That bothered him in a different way.

If she had been arrogant, he could have been angry with her.

If she had laughed at him, he could have blamed her.

But Emily looked almost uncomfortable with all the attention.

Daniel continued.

"The problem wasn't that you offered to train with her."

Marcus said nothing.

"The problem was that before you touched hands, you'd already decided what she could do."

Marcus looked away.

Daniel pointed toward the words above the gym entrance.

SKILL WITHOUT HUMILITY IS JUST ANOTHER FORM OF WEAKNESS.

"You walk under that every day."

Marcus breathed slowly.

"I know."

"Do you?"

No one moved.
