The Cop Cornered Her in a Parking Garage — Then Mocked Her Like She Had No Power
Chapter 4
Malcolm's easy smile faltered for just a fraction of a second, though he recovered quickly, offering a vague explanation about department protocol and standard notifications. Amara did not accept it, though she did not press further. Not yet. She simply told him that she had never mentioned to anyone in this department that she was investigating them. Malcolm said nothing at all.
The pieces began to arrange themselves in Amara's mind on the drive out of the precinct that night. each detail sliding into place with the same clarity she brought to reading a case file. This had not been a random stop. Somewhere earlier that evening, Darius had received a directive, one Colton clearly knew nothing about, instructing him to locate a woman riding a red motorcycle through that particular stretch of the city. The question that mattered now was why. Amara suspected the answer had less to do with her identity and more to do with what she was carrying, specifically the phone in her jacket pocket, which held fragments of the very investigation that threatened the people giving those directives.
She called Nia the next morning from a quiet corner of her chambers. The city already loud outside her window, and Nia confirmed what Amara had feared. A portion of the investigation's secure data had been accessed without authorization sometime in the last 48 hours. a breach traced to a login that should never have had that level of clearance. Amara asked how many people held access to that particular file. Nia answered that only four people in the entire operation carried those credentials.
One of those four names belonged to the man who had stood in that precinct the night before, offering apologies with a smile that never quite reached his eyes. When Amara raised the possibility directly with Malcolm later that day, he denied it immediately, his voice sharper than it had been the previous night, insisting the accusation was absurd. Darius, cornered and desperate, tried to shift the blame onto Colton, suggesting his partner had mishandled the paperwork or misread a directive that never truly existed. Colton, for the first time since the stop began, refused to accept the role being assigned to him. He told the truth plainly in front of Malcolm, in front of Amara, in front of anyone within earshot.
Darius had received a phone call the night before the arrest. A call he had taken privately away from his partner and had returned from that call with a name and a description that matched Amara almost exactly. Darius turned on him immediately, demanding to know what exactly Colton thought he was doing. Colton held his ground and answered simply that he was telling the truth, nothing more. That evening, Amara received a video file from Nia forwarded from a source neither of them would name aloud, showing the exterior of a parking structure the night before the stop.
The footage was brief, grainy, timestamped precisely 12 hours before Darius pulled his patrol car across her path on the avenue. In the video, Darius stood beside his own vehicle, speaking with a man in a dark coat, who kept his face angled slightly away from the camera. When the man finally turned, if only for a second, the resolution was clear enough to remove any doubt. It was Malcolm Graves. Amara did not move against Malcolm immediately, though every instinct told her the evidence in hand was already enough to justify it.
She wanted more than his arrest. She wanted him to expose the shape of the network himself to reveal in his own words how far it reached and who else stood inside it. So she let him believe for a while longer that her investigation began and ended with Darius. A single corrupt officer acting alone, a bad apple easily excised without disturbing the rest of the orchard. Malcolm, eager to believe his own explanation, leaned into it whenever they spoke, insisting that Darius had always been a problem, that the department had suspected him for years, that his behavior on the street that night was simply who he was.
Amara let him talk, and when he finished, she asked him a single question that unraveled the careful story he had built. If Darius truly acted alone," she asked. "Then why had Malcolm personally met with him in a parking structure 12 hours before the stop took place? " Malcolm had no answer ready, and for the first time since she had met him, his composure cracked visibly, a flicker of panic crossing features that had been trained for decades to show nothing at all. While Malcolm scrambled to recover his footing, Nia worked quietly through financial records that told a story far more damning than any conversation could. Wire transfers routed through a series of intermediary accounts, each one slightly more obscured than the last.
Case files altered after the fact, timestamps adjusted, key evidence quietly removed from digital storage without explanation. Traffic and security footage deleted from servers across multiple precincts. always in the days immediately following an arrest that should have led somewhere it never did. Every thread, when pulled far enough, connected back to a network larger than one officer, larger than one precinct, reaching into corners of the department that had operated in the dark for years without consequence. Darius, watching the walls close in around him, began to crack under the weight of what he had done. He understood with sudden and brutal clarity that Malcolm had never intended to protect him, that he had always been expendable, a convenient face for a much larger operation to hide behind.
Colton, meanwhile, made his decision. He reached out to Amara directly, offering to hand over everything he had gathered, recordings, internal messages, anything that could help dismantle the structure Darius and Malcolm had built together. But before he could deliver the full weight of that evidence, Malcolm discovered what he was planning and the confrontation that followed left no room for pretense on either side. Malcolm found Amara alone in a small conference room later that week, closing the door quietly behind him before crossing the space to stand directly in front of her desk. His voice, when he finally spoke, had lost the polished warmth of their earlier conversations, replaced by something colder and far more direct.
He told her plainly that she had gone too far, that she was reaching into territory that would cost her more than she understood. Amara did not stand, did not raise her voice, did not so much as shift in her seat. She simply told him no, that she hadn't gone too far at all. Then she glanced at the watch on her wrist, unhurried, and told him she had only just begun. Malcolm's next move was to reach for the only tool he had left. the authority still attached to his rank, and he used it aggressively, ordering internal records sealed, and demanding that certain files be pulled from circulation before anyone outside the department could examine them.
