begin at a small depression that had always been hidden beneath the deepest water. The stonework was partly obscured by clay and silt, and no one wanted to disturb it before understanding how the water might move if the blockage changed. Owen studied the arrangement and asked whether the flow measurements showed water leaving the pond at the same rate it entered.

"Not exactly," Warren said. "The spring kept contributing even while we were lowering the water. We had to account for that in the discharge plan." Owen nodded, as if the answer confirmed a suspicion he had arrived with. He explained that the visible pond might be the least important part of the system, a place where water accumulated above a deeper path rather than the source of the water itself. The hidden pathway, if correctly built, could have remained functional for generations even while the pond gradually collected sediment over it.

"Think of the ground as a collection of narrow rooms," Owen told Adele. "Water enters one room, passes through another, and comes out somewhere you may never have connected with its beginning." He pointed to the ridge, where patches of broken feldspar-rich stone showed through the grass. "In some places the rock itself changes as water moves through it over very long periods. If a person redirects the flow, even slightly, the visible landscape can begin telling a different story."

Adele led him to the section of pale mud that had first attracted her attention. Owen knelt beside an already exposed sample area, scooped a small amount into a clean container, and rubbed another pinch gently between his fingertips. The texture was unusually fine, with almost none of the grit he expected from an ordinary pond bottom. When he added a drop of clean water, it formed a smooth, chalky paste rather than a sandy smear. He inspected it through his lens, then sat back on his heels.

"What is it?" Adele asked. Owen pursed his lips. "I'm not going to name it until I have a sample examined," he said.

"I've been wrong often enough to respect that rule." Frank, who had followed them down the slope, asked whether they might at least get a guess. Owen held up his muddy fingers in the gray daylight and answered, "A clay mineral. Possibly a very interesting one."

Warren was more concerned about the wall into which the pipe disappeared. With Owen's agreement and within the limits of the revised approval, his crew removed loose sediment by hand and exposed a narrow section of fitted stone. The stones curved inward, forming a shallow arch, and a dark opening became visible beneath them. Water seeped steadily through the opening despite the dry-looking surface around it. The movement was quiet, almost invisible until someone held a blade of grass near the current and watched it bend.
