"It took more than a hundred years to filter?" Adele asked, thinking of the line that had already made its way through town gossip. Owen nodded cautiously. "The water moving through this system has had that long to wash and redistribute very fine particles, yes.

We should be careful about claiming the filter created the deposit or removed every impurity. But Josiah's design may have maintained the very conditions that kept this part of the deposit unusually clean. Imagine a coffee filter working a little at a time, for generations, except the earth had made the coffee long before Josiah built his first wall."

She liked that explanation because it left room for uncertainty without diminishing the achievement. Josiah had not dug a vault in 1888 hoping to manufacture a valuable mineral for descendants he would never meet. He had wanted to control a spring, keep his low ground from flooding, and make difficult farmland productive. He had built something useful because the immediate problem mattered. The rare material beneath the pond was not evidence of hidden foresight so much as the extraordinary consequence of patient practical work.

Owen had also brought a caution. Mineral purity meant very little if the deposit was too thin, too scattered, or too close to important water-bearing structures for extraction to be permissible. A larger survey would require permission, environmental review, and technical expertise beyond his own. He was willing to help document the science, but he did not want his curiosity mistaken for a recommendation to begin digging up the farm. Adele assured him that she had not come this far merely to let a different kind of heavy machinery damage the place.

Word spread through the county before she finished reading the full report. A local radio host who had spent a week joking about the widow's empty pond now invited callers to speculate about whether Thistledown Hollow was sitting on a fortune. Someone told the feed store owner that kaolin was used to make porcelain; someone else said face powder; a third person insisted it was a secret ingredient in expensive medicine. Each statement contained a fragment of truth, but together they became a legend far larger than what Owen's report actually established. Adele learned to begin conversations by saying the same sentence: "We are still testing."

Frank arrived with a newspaper clipping about a clay mine in another state and asked whether she would soon be selling white dirt by the truckload. Adele showed him the map of the spring and explained that the richest-looking seam lay close to the historic filtration system. "If a truckload means breaking that chamber apart, there won't be one," she said. Frank glanced toward the pond, remembered the rain and the men working through the night to save the stones, and nodded without arguing. "Then we'd better make sure whoever comes knows that," he replied.
