It turned out to be a keychain shaped like a tiny silver wrench with the words GOOD PEOPLE EXIST engraved on one side.

Chloe hung it from her backpack.

Daniel pretended not to be affected.

The following weeks began to establish a new normal.

The crowd became appointments instead of spectators. Media calls slowed. The viral post moved lower in people’s feeds, replaced by newer stories. Daniel was relieved.

The business increase remained.

He reviewed the books one Sunday night after Chloe went to bed.

Revenue had nearly doubled in three weeks. Expenses were rising too: additional labor, parts inventory, scheduling software, overtime. More importantly, they were losing jobs because the shop physically could not hold enough cars.

Daniel opened the desk drawer at home where he had put Peter Lang’s card.

He read it again.

Lang Community Partners.

Local capital. Sustainable growth. Community impact.

Marketing language, Daniel thought.

Still, he did not throw it away.

On Monday afternoon, Grace and Karen stopped by with lunch from the same diner whose soup had started everything.

“Peace offering,” Grace announced.

“For what?”

“For accidentally reorganizing your life.”

Daniel accepted the bag.

“That might require more than soup.”

Karen looked toward the packed appointment board.

“Are you holding up okay?”

“Define okay.”

“Sleeping.”

“Sometimes.”

“Eating.”

Daniel lifted the soup.

“Apparently.”

“Seeing your daughter before she graduates college.”

Daniel gave her a look.

Karen smiled.

“I’m serious. Good outcomes can still exhaust you.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have to personally carry every good thing that came from that night.”

Daniel leaned against the desk.

“That’s the second time someone has said something like that.”

“Then maybe listen to one of us.”

Peter’s black sedan arrived again while Karen and Grace were still there.

This time he brought another man carrying a slim document case.

Daniel saw him through the window and sighed.

Karen followed his gaze.

“The investor?”

“How do you know about him?”

“Grace knows Chloe. Chloe knows everything.”

Daniel looked toward the waiting area.

Chloe, doing homework at the small counter after school, suddenly became deeply interested in her textbook.

“Traitor,” Daniel called.

“I love you too,” Chloe replied without looking up.

Peter entered and greeted Daniel politely.
