“That doesn’t mean anything.”

A guest at a nearby table spoke.

“Excuse me.”

The manager turned.

The man in the tailored jacket gestured toward Elias.

“Is he leaving?”

“Yes, sir.”

“He’s been standing there for five minutes.”

The manager’s face tightened.

“I apologize.”

Elias looked at the guest.

The guest looked away as though Elias were an unpleasant object that had taken too long to be removed.

The manager turned back.

“Sir, please.”

Elias picked up his bag.

“I will.”

He took one step.

Then stopped.

“But there is something you should know.”

The manager’s expression became openly irritated.

“What?”

Elias turned.

“You should know who you’re asking to leave.”

The guest behind him gave a short laugh.

The manager folded her arms.

“And who exactly are you?”

Elias looked toward the young server first.

Then the hostess.

Then the manager.

“The person who built this place.”

Nobody spoke.

The pianist continued playing because he had not heard.

Around them, however, conversation weakened.

The manager blinked.

“You built this place?”

“Yes.”

“Sir, if this is some kind of—”

“It isn’t.”

“Then prove it.”

Elias’s expression changed slightly.

“I don’t need to prove it to you.”

The manager almost smiled.

“Then I’m going to ask you one final time to leave.”

Elias looked beyond her.

Toward the wine display.

There.

Exactly where it had always been beneath all the renovation.

He reached into his coat.

The manager stiffened for an instant.

Elias withdrew a small brass key.

Old.

Darkened by age.

The young server looked at it.

“What is that?”

Elias walked past the decorative wine wall.

The manager followed.

“Sir, employees only beyond this point.”

Elias ignored her.

He reached the narrow corridor.

At the end stood a door painted the same charcoal gray as the wall.

Most employees believed it was locked storage.

Elias inserted the key.

It turned.

The click sounded unusually loud.

The manager stopped.

“How do you have a key to that?”

Elias opened the door.

“Because I was the one who locked it.”

The young server followed at a respectful distance.

“What is this room?”

Elias switched on the light.

The bulb was dim.

Dust sat across old furniture.

The space was smaller than the manager expected.

No safe.

No hidden office full of money.

No secret executive suite.

Just a room preserved badly by neglect.

An old wooden desk.

Two chairs.

Shelves.

A framed photograph leaning face-down against the wall.

Several storage boxes.

A narrow cabinet with brass handles.

Elias stood in the doorway.

“Nothing in here was ever meant to impress anyone.”

His voice softened.

“This is where everything started.”

The young server looked around.

“You’ve been here before.”

Elias smiled sadly.

“I remember where everything was.”

He walked toward the old desk.

His hand touched the surface.
