Ryan looked at Mike.

Mike nodded.

“Reset.”

They stood.

Ryan’s cheeks were red.

Not from exertion.

He came forward faster.

Angela held up one hand.

“Technical.”

Ryan slowed.

Barely.

The next minute was harder for Angela.

Ryan was excellent.

Once he stopped chasing emotionally, he became much more difficult.

He controlled her against the edge.

Nearly took her back.

Angela defended.

Thirty seconds remaining.

Ryan settled into a strong position.

Angela tapped.

He released instantly.

Good.

They restarted.

Timer ended.

No winner declared.

Mike said:

“Time.”

Ryan stood breathing lightly.

Angela breathed harder.

Age was real.

So was current training volume.

Ryan looked at her.

“Okay.”

Angela asked:

“What?”

“You’re good.”

“That isn’t what I’m asking.”

He frowned.

She continued:

“What did you feel when I moved away?”

Ryan shrugged.

“That you were giving space.”

“And?”

“I took it.”

“Every time.”

He stared.

Angela continued:

“You heard retreat as invitation.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“That’s competition.”

“Yes.”

“In competition, maybe that’s useful.”

She looked toward Ethan.

“But when a student asks you to reduce intensity, you treat that the same way.”

Ryan folded his arms.

“No, I don’t.”

Angela nodded.

“Then think about it.”

He started to answer.

Mike said:

“Let her finish.”

Angela continued:

“When someone creates space in this room, you feel responsible for closing it.”

“When somebody says easy, you think they need pressure.”

“When somebody hesitates, you think your job is to push through the hesitation.”

Ryan frowned.

“That’s coaching.”

“Sometimes.”

Angela nodded.

“But sometimes coaching means letting people set the speed at which they learn.”

Ryan said nothing.

Angela stepped off the mat.

Jason immediately stepped on.

“Ready?”

Angela looked at Mike.

“Thirty seconds.”

Mike nodded.

Angela drank water.

Ethan approached.

“You can stop.”

“I know.”

“Seriously.”

“I know.”

Ryan heard.

Something about that conversation stayed with him.

Angela returned.

Round two.

Jason Mercer.

Ego.

They touched hands.

Jason smiled.

“Tap early if you need to.”

Angela looked at him.

“I will.”

Timer started.

Jason moved differently from Ryan.

More patient.

More strategic.

He did not chase.

He waited for Angela to commit.

Good.

Angela respected it.

Jason secured the first takedown thirty seconds in.

Controlled.

Safe.

He passed.

Angela defended.

Jason isolated an arm.

Before the position became dangerous, Angela tapped.

Jason released.

Then sat back.

“You’re good.”

Angela nodded.

“Reset.”

Jason frowned.

“You tapped.”

“Yes.”

“Round’s not over?”

“No.”

Mike said:

“Individual exchange.”

“We reset.”

Jason shrugged.

They restarted.

He controlled again.

This time Angela made him work longer.

Jason found another submission entry.

Angela tapped early.

Again.

He released.

Then laughed.

“What?”

Angela asked.

“You’re tapping before it’s even locked.”

“Yes.”

“So why are we doing this?”

Angela looked at him.

“You tell me.”

“You’re avoiding the hard part.”

“What hard part?”

“Working out.”

Angela nodded.

“I could probably work longer.”

Jason smiled.

“Exactly.”

Angela looked toward the students.

Then back at him.

“But I chose not to.”

Jason frowned.

“And?”

“And you think my choice needs your approval.”

The room went still.

Jason laughed once.

Smaller this time.

“That’s not what I said.”

“It’s what you do.”

He stared.

Angela continued:

“You mock people who tap early.”

“They start wondering whether the tap is really theirs.”

Jason folded his arms.

“People do panic.”

“Yes.”

“They quit too fast.”

“Sometimes.”

“So?”

Angela nodded.

“So teach them options before the next round.”

“Don’t keep teaching them that tapping is embarrassing.”

Jason said:

“I always release.”

“That’s good.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

Angela looked toward Ethan.

“The joke after.”

Jason’s face changed.

Angela continued:

“You release their body.”

“Then punish the decision.”

That sentence landed harder than the counter she had used on Ryan.

Jason stared.

Mike looked down.

He had heard those jokes before.

He had laughed at some.

Angela continued:

“If someone taps because they’re scared, the tap still counts.”

“If someone taps because they’re exhausted, it counts.”

“If someone taps because they don’t understand the position, it counts.”

“If somebody taps too early…”

She shrugged.

“…you get to train again.”

Jason looked toward the mat.

The timer had expired while they were talking.

Mike said:

“Time.”

Jason stepped off without another word.

Derek approached.

Before stepping on, he looked at Angela.

“You sure?”

Angela smiled faintly.

“First one to ask.”

Derek nodded.

Mike said:

“We’re modifying this.”

“No takedowns.”

“Start seated.”

Derek agreed immediately.

Angela sat.

Round three.

Derek Sloan.

Control.

They began.

Derek moved slowly.

Good.

Angela framed.

He passed carefully.

His weight settled.

Heavy.

Very heavy.

Angela worked to make space.

Derek followed.

He was technically sound.

Not fast.

Not flashy.

Just pressure.

Angela escaped.

They reset.

Second exchange.

Derek controlled again.

Angela said:

“Lighter.”

Derek immediately reduced pressure.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

Ten seconds passed.

He became focused on the position.

His weight increased.

Angela felt it.

“Lighter.”

He adjusted again.

Twenty seconds.

Same thing.

Angela tapped his shoulder.

“Stop.”

Derek released instantly.

He looked confused.

“Did I hurt you?”

“No.”

“Then why stop?”

Angela sat up.

“Because I asked lighter three times.”

Derek frowned.

“I went lighter.”

“You did.”

He looked even more confused.

Angela continued:

“Then you drifted back.”

Derek thought.

“I didn’t mean to.”

“I know.”

He stopped.
