Later that evening, Maya returned home and opened Daniel's maintenance notebook. She did not read for long. She turned off the office light, made tea, and sat in the living room without documents in front of her.

At 10:17 p.m., her personal phone rang. The number was not saved. She answered carefully. "Maya Williams."

A man spoke in a low voice. "Judge Williams, this is Officer Bennett." Maya sat upright. "I'm listening."

There was a pause. "The motorcycle was never reported stolen." Maya did not reach for a pen. She knew that even the sound of writing might make Bennett end the call.

"Tell me what happened," she said. Bennett remained quiet for several seconds. She could hear the low hum of a car engine and the faint sound of traffic beyond the windows.

"There was no report," he said. "No stolen motorcycle, no matching plate, no call from dispatch. Hale saw the Ducati at the checkpoint and told Mercer to stop you." "I heard what he said through the motorcycle recording."

"I know. Mercer told everyone about the upload when we got back." "Why are you calling me?" "Because that was not the first time."

Maya sat back and kept her voice steady. "Take your time."

Bennett exhaled. "The checkpoint is not really about inspections. Hale watches for valuable vehicles, classic cars, large motorcycles, sports cars, restored trucks. Usually people from outside the county. Mercer stops them, finds an administrative reason to hold the vehicle, and Kingsley Towing takes it."

"What happens after the tow?" "The owner gets offered a release payment. If they refuse, the storage charges increase. Some vehicles are moved before the owner can get a hearing."

"Who decides which vehicles are stopped?" "Hale makes most of the decisions. Mercer makes some on his own. There is a list."

Maya looked toward Daniel's maintenance notebook on the table. "What kind of list?" "They call it the premium vehicle recovery list." "Who has access?"

"Hale, Mercer, two supervisors, Curtis, and a few officers who work the checkpoints. Maybe more. I do not know everyone." "What information is recorded?"

"The model, estimated value, home county, usual route if they know it, expected storage fees, and whether the owner is likely to pay for a quick release." Maya's grip tightened around the telephone. "Was my Ducati on that list?" "Yes."

"How long before the stop?" "I saw the entry earlier that week. I do not remember the exact day." "Who entered it?"

"I do not know." "Where did the information come from?"
