"Officer Bennett," she said, "what time was the tow request entered?" Mercer turned toward her. "You do not question officers here." "I asked a factual question."
Bennett looked down at the form. Mercer took the clipboard from him. "Move her."
The cuffs were removed before Maya was placed in a small interview room. The room contained a table and three chairs. Mercer left without explanation.
Maya sat and examined her wrists. There was no injury, but the restraint had made the purpose of the stop clear. Compliance had not resolved anything because compliance had never been the issue. A few minutes later, Mercer returned with a report form. "Read this and sign at the bottom."
Maya reviewed it. The report stated that she had failed to explain the motorcycle's ownership, delayed inspection, and refused multiple lawful instructions. It also stated that the Ducati would remain in administrative storage for up to 30 days. She looked up. "My ownership documents were valid."
"The department has not completed verification." "This says I failed to explain ownership." "You argued instead of cooperating." "I answered every question related to ownership."
Mercer pushed the pen toward her. "Sign it." "No." "Refusing to sign will delay the process."
"Then correct the report." Mercer collected the document and left.
At 2:37 p.m., Maya was allowed one telephone call. She dialed Eleanor Price. Eleanor answered on the second ring. "Maya?"
"Write down the time." There was a pause, then the sound of a pen. "Go ahead."
"2:37. Monroe County Sheriff's Department. My motorcycle has been taken by Kingsley Towing. Preserve this call log. Do not contact anyone until I call again."
"Are you safe?" "Yes." "Are you charged?" "Not with an offense they can identify."
Eleanor's voice became more focused. "Do they know who you are?" "No." "Do you want me to tell them?"
"Not yet." Another pause followed. "What happened?" "I'll explain when I'm released. Save every public video connected to Kingsley Boulevard from this afternoon."
"I will." "And Eleanor, note that the tow truck arrived before the detention form was completed." "I have it." Maya ended the call.
Sheriff Hale entered the room several minutes later carrying a folder. He closed the door and sat across from her. "I believe this situation can be resolved without becoming more complicated," he said. Maya waited.
