An emergency meeting began after sunset. Helen asked how quickly an independent technical team could reconstruct the control map and validate the disputed reporting. Samir said the documentation existed, but integrating it with live operational data would require people who understood why the processes had been designed as they were. He could handle his portion and knew others could handle theirs. What they lacked was a coordinator with authority to make decisions across departments and enough historical context to distinguish deliberate safeguards from obsolete workarounds. The name Callan Mercer returned to the room, this time without the comfortable assumption that he could simply be summoned.

Miriam volunteered to speak with him. She had known the value of his work longer than most and had never publicly taken credit for it, although she was honest enough to recognize she had not defended him forcefully enough either. She called from a quiet conference room, explained the payments partner's notice, and outlined the board's new independence requirements. Callan listened while Maya practiced a piece of music in the next room. He asked for the specific risk statement and the current incident log, not a verbal assurance that the company was in danger. Miriam sent both through counsel's secure review process under an appropriate confidentiality agreement.

He read the documents that evening. The condition he had feared had not yet become a full financial collapse, but the margins were narrowing and several protective actions required prompt coordination. He could see potential ways to stabilize the situation without improvising changes to sensitive client records. He could also see places where outside specialists would be essential, because a company that depended on one employee to verify all of its controls had already failed an important test. He told Miriam he would meet the independent committee the following morning. He did not promise to return as an employee, and she did not ask him to.

Before leaving home, Callan sat beside Maya at the breakfast table and explained that his former company was having trouble. She stopped spreading jam on her toast and asked whether he had to go back to the people who had been mean to him. He took the question seriously. "I might help some of the people who work there," he said. "But helping them doesn't mean pretending what happened was all right."

Maya frowned. "Will you still come to the library after school?" He showed her the calendar. The meeting ended at noon, and Leah could cover the pickup if it ran longer, but the library visit remained planned. Maya inspected the calendar and nodded, satisfied for now.

The independent committee met him in a room two floors below the executive suite. Vivian was present, but Helen chaired, and an outside legal adviser joined by video. Callan brought no theatrical demands and no list of people he wanted embarrassed. He came with a proposed statement of work, a priority
