Isaac's voice boomed suddenly right above him. Cole didn't move. He just stared at the scuff marks on the floor between his feet.

"Hey," Isaac said again, a little sharper this time. "You deaf?"

Cole slowly lifted his head. His face was a map of tired lines. He didn't look angry, and he didn't look intimidated; he just looked impossibly bored.

"Can I help you?" Cole asked. His voice was a low, quiet rumble—barely above a whisper, yet it carried clearly over the buzzing lights.

"Yeah, man," Isaac smiled. It was a predatory, gleaming smile, the kind used by a man who assumes he holds all the cards. "I'm teaching a seminar on street survival over here. We're talking about recognizing threats. My regular training dummy called in sick tonight. You mind standing up for a second? I just want to show these guys how easy it is to manipulate a stationary target."

Cole looked at Isaac. He looked at the perfectly ironed gi pants, the pristine black belt, and the six students standing awkwardly behind their instructor.

"I'm in the middle of my physical therapy," Cole said quietly. "Not interested. Have a good class." He reached down to pick up his resistance band.

Isaac stepped forward, placing his bare foot entirely inside Cole's personal space, practically pinning Cole's sneaker to the floor. "Come on, man. Don't be a buzzkill," Isaac scoffed. His tone was light, but there was a sharp, mocking edge beneath it. He was performing, and he couldn't take a 'no' in front of his audience. It undermined the alpha narrative. "It takes literally ten seconds. I'm not going to hurt you. I just need to show a basic collar tie."

"I said no," Cole repeated. He didn't raise his voice, and he didn't lean back to create distance. He just stayed perfectly still.

"Look," Isaac laughed, turning to his class. "This is exactly what I'm talking about. The freeze response. The brain locks up when confronted with a dominant force. He can't fight, so he shuts down. It's basic biology."

Isaac turned back to Cole. The smile vanished, replaced by a hard, patronizing stare. "Stand up, old man. I'm not asking anymore. You're part of the class now."

---

The air in the gym seemed to thicken. The ambient noise, the clanking of dumbbells from the far side, and the whir of the treadmills all faded into a dull roar in Cole's ears.

Physiologically, things began to happen to Cole's body that he hadn't experienced in over four years. His heart rate did not spike; it dropped, settling into a slow, rhythmic, heavy thud. The dull, persistent ache in his left shoulder vanished, erased instantly by a sudden, massive dump of adrenaline that his nervous system had kept in deep storage. His vision narrowed, the edges of the room blurring out. All he saw was Isaac's center of mass, the distance between Isaac's lead knee and his own hands, the exact angle of Isaac's jawline, and the position of Isaac's hands.
