The next morning, Vivian asked for Callan's phone number. Her assistant gave it to her with a strange look, as if wanting to ask whether she had reconsidered the manner of his departure. Vivian called once and allowed the phone to ring until voicemail answered.

She tried again an hour later. Then she sent a carefully worded email requesting a discussion about urgent transition matters. She was not accustomed to being ignored by someone whose salary she had authorized. The silence unsettled her precisely because it contained no challenge she could defeat or concession she could purchase.

Callan was in Maya's school gymnasium when his phone began vibrating. The science fair occupied folding tables beneath a row of basketball hoops, and the air smelled of glue, poster paint, and warm cardboard. Maya had built a small bridge over a painted river, with two removable supports demonstrating how the structure responded to different amounts of weight. She explained the design to teachers and parents with serious concentration, occasionally turning toward her father to make sure he had heard a particularly important detail. He had promised to be there. He put the phone on silent and kept the promise.

A teacher asked how the experiment had changed between the first and final designs. Maya pointed to photographs of collapsed prototypes and announced that the broken bridges were the most useful part because they showed which assumptions were wrong. Several adults smiled.

Callan felt a brief ache of recognition, followed by pride so large that it displaced everything else. Later, when Maya asked whether he thought Elena would have liked the project, he told her that her mother would have asked to keep the broken pieces. "So she could show people how you learned," he said. Maya considered that and began gathering the photographs for a place of honor on the display.

They walked home through the afternoon sunshine, talking about bridges and whether the same idea could help support a dollhouse roof. Callan checked his messages only after they reached the apartment. Three calls from Vivian, one from Miriam, and another from Anika asked whether he would consider an urgent discussion. He felt a flash of the old reflex to put on his coat and head downtown. Then he looked toward Maya, who was carefully setting her bridge on the kitchen table, and waited until he understood whether the reflex came from responsibility or habit. He replied that operational records should be handled through the existing incident process and that he could discuss a defined consulting scope once the board established independent oversight.

Miriam answered quickly, thanking him for clarifying the terms. Vivian did not. That evening, at a board briefing, she described his response as obstructionist.
