“You could travel.”
“With who?”
“Friends.”
“My friends complain about their knees.”
“So do you.”
“That is why we are friends.”
Eventually they hired a bookkeeper three days a week.
Denise kept customer accounts and whatever else she believed nobody could do correctly without her supervision.
Isaiah let her.
The business’s third anniversary arrived without a party.
Tasha brought a grocery-store cake to the break room.
Someone wrote THREE YEARS / STILL RUNNING in blue icing.
Reuben ate two pieces and denied taking the second.
Malik presented Isaiah with a framed photocopy of the original Draymond auction receipt.
The total at the bottom read $2,000.
Isaiah stared at it.
“Where’d you get this?”
“Your mom.”
“Of course.”
They hung it beside the old wrench from Otis’s shed.
The wrench had been the first tool Isaiah ever moved permanently from his grandfather’s wall into the warehouse.
Its handle was worn smooth from decades of use.
It was not rare.
It was not expensive.
A new wrench would grip the same bolts better.
That was not the point.
Some objects carried evidence of repetition.
The wrench said Otis had done the work enough times to wear steel smooth.
The auction receipt said Isaiah had once been willing to spend almost everything because he saw a pattern other people had no reason to notice.
Neither object guaranteed the future.
They simply told the truth about the past.
The next morning, a farmer named Earl Simmons brought in a tractor with a transmission complaint.
Isaiah was halfway through a conversation with a supplier when Earl interrupted.
“You the Callaway boy?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I need Mr. Cole.”
“Reuben’s in the back.”
“He’s the mechanic, right?”
“One of them.”
“I want the experienced one.”
Isaiah could have corrected the assumption sharply.
Instead he said, “Reuben’s sixty-five and has thirty-eight years. Tasha has six years and electrical training. I’ve been doing this since I could reach the bench, but I’m twenty-two. Which experience do you need?”
Earl blinked.
“My transmission slips hot.”
“Then Tasha starts with it because she has the bay open and the pressure equipment set. Reuben can review if needed.”
Earl looked uncertain.
