“That one for sale?”

“Already sold.”

“Figures.”

He left without buying anything.

The next Draymond liquidation came in spring, and by then the scene had become familiar enough that Isaiah did not think of it as a return to where everything started until he was physically standing in the same back corner.

Different tractors.

Different company going out of business.

Same crushed gravel under his boots.

Same corrugated auction barn.

Same wind carrying diesel exhaust, dust, and the auctioneer’s amplified voice.

Dale was there.

Reuben was there.

Tasha and Malik were tagging equipment.

Two Callaway flatbeds waited outside the gate.

Isaiah walked the row more slowly than he had at nineteen.

He lifted some hoods now.

Read data plates.

Checked hydraulic sight glasses.

Looked under frames for impact damage.

He still wrote numbers down.

That had not changed.

A young man nearby watched him for several minutes.

Maybe eighteen.

Maybe nineteen.

The boy wore clean work gloves and carried a folded auction list full of handwritten circles.

Finally he asked, “Mr. Callaway?”

Isaiah turned.

“Yes?”

“You really bought fifty dead tractors here?”

“Once.”

“For two thousand dollars?”

“Yes.”

“And made a million dollars?”

Isaiah almost sighed.

“Not from fifty tractors.”

“That’s what people say.”

“People compress stories.”

The young man looked disappointed.

Isaiah remembered being nineteen and surrounded by men who seemed to possess certainty as if age itself provided it.

He chose not to replace their laughter with a different kind of dismissal.

“The first lot gave me inventory and taught me a process,” he said. “The business made revenue over years from tractors, parts, service, and contracts. We spent a lot of money too.”

The young man nodded.

“I’m thinking about buying those mowers.”

Isaiah looked toward the row he indicated.

“What do you know about them?”

“Cheap.”
