"I'm telling you that your account can be suspended pending review, and your future travel privileges are not unconditional. That is an internal airline decision. It is not a federal no-fly designation, regardless of what anyone may have suggested to you today."

"This is unbelievable."

"Hand Mr. Phillips his phone."

Preston stood motionless. Darien extended his hand without rising, and after a long moment Preston returned the device. Darien placed it on speaker so the remaining exchange could be heard clearly.

"I'm back, Richard."

"Darien, I'm sorry. Not just for the inconvenience, but for our failure to treat your reservation and your account of the incident with the seriousness they deserved. I'm having airport operations issue immediate written instructions to the gate team and the captain. You keep your seat."

"Thank you."

"The full fare will be refunded, and I am authorizing one hundred thousand frequent-flyer miles as an additional gesture, not as a substitute for a proper investigation. I have also asked compliance to preserve the booking records and the crew reports. This will be investigated independently of whatever business Apex does with us."

Darien considered the words. "That last part matters to me," he said. "I don't want a different standard because I happen to know you. I want to know why a standard everyone deserved failed so quickly."

"That's a fair question," Richard said. "I intend to answer it."

"And one more thing," Darien added. "The security contractor didn't lay a hand on me. He actually tried to slow the situation down. His name is Luis Vega. I would appreciate that going into the report."

There was a brief silence at the other end. "I'll make certain his conduct is documented accurately," Richard said. "Get some rest. We'll speak after you land."

Darien ended the call. He remained seated as the screen went dark, aware that half the cabin had stopped pretending to attend to anything else. For the first time, Preston Carmichael seemed uncertain whether there was a sentence he could say that would restore the world to the order he had assumed it would maintain.

Darien looked from him to Brock and then to Captain Miller. The silence felt unusually heavy, as though the entire airplane had been waiting for someone to tell it which rules actually applied. He straightened his jacket, placed the phone beside him, and spoke in the same calm voice he had used at the beginning.

"I believe the seat assignment is settled. I have an important call after we land, and I would very much like to sleep before then."

Robert nodded, but he did not look relieved. The airline had found the correct answer, yet the way they arrived at it had exposed something more consequential than a computer error. Brock stared at her shoes, unable to meet Darien's eyes, while Preston stood in the aisle with the realization that his name and title no longer commanded the outcome he expected.

Then Brock's radio crackled. The gate team had another problem to report, and it was about to become Preston's.
