"Thank you for hearing me," she said.

"I heard you. Please close the privacy door now. I'd like to be alone until we land."

She nodded and drew the sliding partition shut. It moved with the quiet mechanical precision of a feature that had been designed to create a boundary between one passenger's space and the rest of the aircraft. Darien watched the door close, and the small click when it reached the frame felt more reassuring than he expected.

For a few moments, he sat absolutely still. The cabin around him continued its departure preparations, but his hands had begun to tremble very slightly now that no one was watching. He placed them together on his lap and looked down, surprised by how much effort the confrontation had required.

He had not been frightened in a way that felt dramatic or cinematic. He had been calculating, second by second, which movement would be interpreted as defiance and which statement would be recast as a threat. He had noticed how close Preston's finger came to his face and how quickly Robert escalated to security. He had thought, more than once, about the videos he had seen of other passengers being pulled from aircraft while bystanders watched helplessly.

Darien took a slow breath and released it. The victory was real, but it had not canceled the earlier danger. His wealth had supplied a path out of the situation, not immunity from it, and the difference mattered more to him than the complimentary refund or the embarrassment of the people who had underestimated him.

A light knock sounded against the suite door. "Mr. Phillips?" a young male voice asked. "My name is Thomas. I'll be looking after you for the flight. May I leave some water and a warm towel?"

"Of course," Darien said.

Thomas appeared with a small tray and a nervous smile. He was in his late twenties, neatly dressed, with dark hair and a careful manner that suggested he had been warned that a small mistake could cost him dearly. He set the tray down without meeting Darien's eyes for longer than necessary.

"I'm sorry for the delay, sir. We should be ready to push back soon."

"Thank you, Thomas."

"If there's anything at all you need, please let me know."

Darien recognized the fear in his voice. "You're doing fine," he said. "I don't need special treatment. A glass of water and some quiet will be more than enough."

Thomas looked up, a little startled. "Of course, sir."

"And Thomas?"

"Yes?"

"You aren't responsible for what happened before you took over this cabin. Don't carry it around as though you are."

For a moment, the young attendant seemed unsure how to respond. Then his shoulders relaxed slightly. "Thank you, Mr. Phillips. I'll make sure you're comfortable."

The aircraft doors finally closed, and the safety demonstration proceeded. The pilot's announcement apologized for the ground delay without disclosing anyone's personal circumstances. The engines began their low mechanical whine, and the cabin vibrated gently as the jet pushed back from the gate.
