He swung toward her. "Stay out of it."

Captain Miller raised his voice. "Mr. Carmichael, you will stop shouting at other passengers. Your opportunity to remain aboard this flight is over. Please collect your belongings and go with security to the gate."

Preston stood very still. The decision had finally become one he could not appeal through charm, money, or a title. He glanced toward the forward door where Luis Vega waited, hands at his sides, and for an instant Darien thought the man might accept the outcome.

Then Preston reached for his duffel, caught the strap on the edge of the partition, and yanked so hard that the bag struck the aisle wall. He shoved past the captain, trying to force his way toward Gregory's phone. "Give me that thing," he demanded. "Delete the video."

Luis stepped between them. "Sir, stop. You need to come with me."

"Get out of my way."

"I'm not going to let you approach another passenger. Let's walk toward the gate."

Preston shoved at Luis's shoulder. The contractor stepped back and repeated the instruction, but Preston swung an arm in frustration. His elbow struck Luis along the side of the ribs, hard enough to drive the air from the guard's lungs and force him against the bulkhead.

For a moment, everyone froze. Until then, the only person Brock had described as aggressive was the one who had remained seated throughout the argument. Now the cabin had its first unmistakable act of physical aggression, and it had come from the man she had been trying to accommodate.

Luis recovered quickly. He took hold of Preston's arm, guided him away from Gregory, and restrained him against the bulkhead without striking him. The second security contractor waiting nearer the door came forward to help while Robert called for Port Authority police. Preston continued shouting that he was being assaulted, that he knew attorneys, and that everyone involved would lose their jobs.

"Mr. Carmichael," Luis said, breathing hard but keeping his voice steady, "stop struggling. The police are coming, and I need you to stop trying to hit people."

"Do you know who I am?"

"Right now, I know you're the passenger who needs to calm down."

The absurdity of the answer might have been funny under different circumstances. There was nothing funny about a crowded aircraft where someone had struck an airport worker and two passengers had pulled back in fear. Robert ordered the cabin crew to keep the aisle clear while police approached through the jet bridge.

Preston was restrained temporarily until officers arrived. The officers separated him from airline staff, asked whether anyone needed medical attention, and listened to initial statements from Luis and the captain. They made clear that any criminal charges would depend on evidence and the applicable law, not on Preston's wealth or his conviction that an airline employee had offended him.

Gregory showed an officer the video he had recorded. Marianne supplied her name and number and offered to give a formal statement. Darien watched from his seat while Preston was escorted off the aircraft, still insisting that the entire incident had been arranged to humiliate him.
