There were fourteen missed calls from Alexander. There were messages from his office, from a longtime family friend, and from a number she did not recognize. One message contained a short video recorded by another passenger during the confrontation. Olivia pressed play and saw herself standing in the first-class aisle, holding her backpack while Caroline pointed toward the divider.

Olivia watched only ten seconds before stopping the clip. Then she called her son.

Alexander answered before the first ring had finished. "Mom? Where are you? Are you all right?"

For several seconds Olivia could hear more in his voice than the words themselves. He sounded angry, frightened, and ashamed in the way children sometimes sound when they discover that someone has hurt a parent they believed they were old enough to protect. Somewhere behind him, people were talking quickly and a telephone was ringing. Olivia imagined the glass-walled office he occupied at Summit headquarters, the assistants gathering information around him, and the terrible force of his attention narrowing on a problem he could not purchase his way out of.

"I'm at Logan," she said. "I'm standing beside a luggage carousel, although I don't have a bag to collect. I needed a place to stop walking."

"I've seen the video. I've read the incident report. Caroline actually wrote that you were removed because of a seating discrepancy." His voice rose, then he caught himself. "I'm sending someone to meet you. I'm coming myself if I can get there quickly enough."

"Alex, listen to me. I'm safe. Nobody needs to send a procession of cars through the airport."

"They took your seat. On my airline. They treated you like you were trying to steal something."

"Yes," she answered. "They did."

It was the calmness of the admission that finally made him stop speaking. Olivia could almost hear him forcing himself to breathe. She had taught him as a boy that anger could tell you something was wrong, but it could not tell you what to do next. He had repeated that lesson in interviews and speeches; now she wondered whether he remembered it when the injured person was his own mother.

"I want them fired," he said. "Caroline, Richard, Diane. Every person who approved it. I could have them off the schedule before you reach your hotel."

"And then what happens to the next woman who looks like me?" Olivia asked.

"We make sure it never happens again."

"With what? Three empty positions? Three new employees who inherit the same training manuals and the same managers who ignored complaints?" Her voice was gentle but unyielding. "You cannot announce that an entire problem has disappeared because you removed the people who happened to be caught."
