"Officer, my boarding pass was scanned at the gate and checked twice on the aircraft," Olivia said. "The airline's own screen shows that seat 2A belongs to me. I am being singled out because these employees believe someone dressed as I am should not be sitting here."

Martin looked at Richard's tablet. "Does the reservation match?" he asked.

"The name and seat match," Richard admitted. "But she won't show another ID."

Martin frowned slightly. "Was another ID required at the gate?"

"Not at this stage," Richard said.

The answer seemed to trouble Martin, but the cabin supervisor remained adamant. Caroline explained that crew members had broad discretion to handle what she described as an unresolved concern about passenger cooperation. She emphasized that a delay might inconvenience the entire aircraft. Martin glanced at the growing line of people waiting in the jet bridge and asked Olivia whether she would consider stepping aside while the staff completed its review.

"I would consider any fair process," Olivia said. "What I will not do is agree that they have found something wrong with my ticket when they haven't."

Caroline's face hardened. "Ma'am, you are being offered an opportunity to resolve this without further disturbance. We can seat you in economy while we finish verifying the reservation."

"Will the person whose name appears on seat 2A be seated here after I leave?" Olivia asked.

Richard looked down. Caroline did not answer. The young woman across the aisle inhaled sharply, as though she had been waiting for someone to state the contradiction aloud.

Olivia felt heat move up the back of her neck. She could have told them her son's name right then, watched their faces rearrange themselves, and ended the confrontation with a single sentence. The temptation lasted only an instant. If her right to remain in 2A depended on being Alexander Bennett's mother, the airline would have proved every point she was trying to make.

"I am not going to prevent the other passengers from traveling," Olivia said at last. She rose slowly and took her backpack from beneath the footrest. "I will move for now, but I want the record to show that I am not agreeing with your decision. I have done nothing to justify being removed from the seat I purchased."

Caroline stepped aside. She did not offer to carry Olivia's suitcase, although Richard had done so for the man ahead of her at the boarding door. Martin offered to retrieve it instead. Olivia thanked him and held her head high as she entered the aisle.
