Claire gathered the drawings carefully, checked the dragon, and retied the ribbon with fingers that had begun to tremble. She did not look up until the papers were safely back against the cardboard. When she met Graham's eyes, there was no helplessness in her expression. There was the controlled anger of someone who had watched another person mock a vulnerable child's gift for no reason other than the enjoyment of doing it.

"You don't have to believe my name," she said. "But you should understand that kindness is not a sign of weakness, and cruelty isn't proof that you belong in charge."

Graham leaned toward her. "Marcus, take her out. Now."

Marcus remained where he was. "Mr. Vance, please. She hasn't hurt anyone, and she has offered to verify her identity. There are guests watching."

"Then let them watch us protect the property."

A man at the elevators raised his phone, apparently filming. Another guest turned away with the practiced discomfort of someone who did not want to become involved. Claire looked at those faces and remembered the children at the hospital, who had been brave enough to ask strangers for help even when they had every reason to be frightened. The comparison made the silence in the lobby feel heavier.

"Thank you, Marcus," she said. "I know this puts you in a difficult position."

He looked at her, almost startled by the gratitude. He had not done enough to deserve it, and that was precisely why it hurt. A man who stood six feet tall and wore a security uniform ought to have been able to protect a guest from being bullied in his own workplace. Instead, he was still looking for a way to intervene that would not put his daughter's future at risk.

Graham turned to Tessa. "Call upstairs. Tell them we're handling a trespasser and that nobody from the executive office is to be disturbed."

"Call upstairs," Claire said, facing him. "Thirty seconds. That's all I'm asking."

"I don't check people. I remove them."

Tessa stared at him. The words were so nakedly revealing that she wished she had recorded them. She reached for the small paper pad beside the desk and wrote them down anyway, precisely as he had said them. When she lifted her head, she saw Graham looking toward the entrance, distracted by a commotion outside.

Three dark vehicles had drawn up beneath the awning. Bellmen hurried forward, umbrellas opened, and the doorman adjusted the rope barriers to make room for a large arriving party. Graham immediately recognized the style of arrival he had been waiting for all evening. "That's them," he said, meaning the wealthy donors and executive guests, not knowing precisely who was in the cars.

Tessa glanced at the VIP screen. The hotel was expecting Daniel Whitmore, Lena Morales, and several board members around this time. Her stomach tightened. She was looking at the proof Graham had demanded, the proof he had prevented everyone from obtaining, and it was arriving on wheels beneath the rain-soaked awning.
