"I don't want Tessa promoted because she helped your wife. I want her supported because she showed judgment and honesty, and because people with those qualities deserve the chance to lead. If she's not ready for everything, train her. Don't set her up to fail and call that gratitude."

Daniel nodded. He had been thinking about the same problem since the moment he made his promise in the lobby. Tessa was bright and compassionate, but the general manager of a large hotel had responsibilities that could not be learned overnight. He wanted her to grow into the position, not become an inspiring anecdote attached to the company's press releases. He asked Lena to prepare a structured development plan and a properly compensated acting appointment.

Claire looked at the artwork drying near the window. Most pages were flat again, although the purple sky had a slight ripple along one edge. She touched the cardboard backing and remembered Lila asking whether the hotel would treat her picture carefully. The thought strengthened her resolve. She would not let the evening's lesson be transformed into a polished corporate slogan that required nothing difficult from anyone.

A little later, Tessa came upstairs with Adrian to explain the morning's arrangements. She had barely slept, and her eyes were shadowed with fatigue, but she stood straighter than she had the night before. Claire invited her to sit rather than making her report from the doorway. Tessa perched on the edge of a chair, still unfamiliar with being treated as part of a conversation about the hotel rather than someone sent to deliver information.

"I wanted to apologize properly," Tessa began. "I should have called even after he threatened me. You asked us to do one easy thing, and I let him stop us."

Claire looked at her for a moment. "Did you offer me your own phone?"

"Yes."

"Did you find the note and try to show him?"

"Yes."

"Did you come into the rain to save the pictures?"

Tessa lowered her eyes. "Yes, ma'am."

"Then you were not one of the people who decided I didn't deserve help. You were someone trying to help inside a system designed to punish you for it. That doesn't mean we can't talk about what you would do differently next time. It means the conversation should be honest about what made doing the right thing difficult."

Tessa's eyes filled. She had spent the night rehearsing apologies, afraid that a single missed opportunity would define her the way Graham's choices had defined him. Claire did not tell her she had been perfect, and for that Tessa felt strangely grateful. She was being given room to learn without having to pretend that fear had never affected her.
