Daniel Whitmore had been speaking quietly to Lena Morales as they approached the entrance. He was wearing a dark overcoat over his suit, and an aide was carrying a leather folder containing materials for the evening's reception. When he heard Graham's last remark, he glanced toward the cluster of people crouched by the curb. At first he saw only a coat and a canvas bag and an umbrella being held too low in the rain.

Then Claire looked up.

Daniel stopped so completely that Lena almost walked into him. Twenty-one years of knowing her made the recognition immediate, even with wet hair against her cheeks and exhaustion in her face. He saw her kneeling over children's drawings in the rain. He saw a security officer gathering the pages and a young receptionist looking close to tears, and he knew before anyone spoke that something had gone terribly wrong.

"Claire?"

She turned toward him and tried to smile. The expression did not hold. "Surprise," she said, and the effort to make the word light broke his heart more than a long explanation might have.

He reached her in three strides, crouched beside her, and took one of the wet pages from Marcus. He did not ask why she was there or why she had flown early. He put his coat around her shoulders and looked first at her face, then at the hand she was holding slightly away from her body. "Are you hurt?" he asked.

"My arm's sore. I'm all right. The pictures got wet."

"We'll save the pictures." He looked at Samuel. "Would you please help get her inside?"

Samuel nodded immediately. Marcus stood with a stack of damp drawings held against the underside of the umbrella. Tessa was still crouched over the final sheet. For a moment nobody moved because everybody was looking toward Graham Vance, who had begun to understand that the arriving man recognized the woman he had just thrown outside.

Graham recovered enough of his composure to step forward and extend his hand. "Mr. Whitmore, welcome. We've been expecting you. I'm Graham Vance, the general manager."

He nodded toward the entrance, still trying to sound untroubled. "I apologize for the disorder by the entrance. We had a minor disturbance involving an unauthorized visitor, but it has been handled."

Daniel rose slowly. He had not yet taken his eyes from Claire, and that made the manager's greeting feel as though it had been delivered into empty air. Lena stepped close enough to hear him whisper, "Who put their hands on her?" She looked at Claire's coat and then at the frightened staff members. The answer was forming before anyone was willing to say it.

Tessa stood, clutching the VIP note. "Mr. Whitmore," she said, her voice shaking, "that's Mrs. Whitmore."

Graham's extended hand remained in the air for an absurd moment. Then he looked toward Claire, at Daniel's overcoat across her shoulders and the hand Daniel held out to help her rise. The manager's smile began to falter. He took a step backward, as though distance might create room for a new explanation.
