"Did you hear the money offer?" Marcus looked directly at Richard. "Yes," Richard's face hardened. "You didn't hear everything after that."

Marcus paused. "No." Richard looked almost relieved.

Then Marcus added, "But I heard enough to know your concern about her wasn't what started this." The relief disappeared. Clare looked from Marcus to Richard. "What started it?" Marcus answered simply. The seat.

The cabin became quiet again. Clare turned back to Richard. Mr. Hail, I need a clear answer. Richard stared at her.

Did you become concerned about Mrs. Brooks before she refused to give you her seat or after? Richard opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Evelyn watched him.

Clare waited. Marcus said nothing.

For the first time since the confrontation began, Richard had no new accusation ready, and his silence left one question hanging over the entire dispute. If Evelyn had really seemed incapable of traveling from the beginning, why had Richard first treated her as perfectly capable of understanding a negotiation over the one thing he wanted from her?

Richard Hail looked at Marcus for several seconds without answering. The cabin had gone quiet enough for Richard to notice how many people were listening. He turned back to Clare. This is ridiculous.

Then help me clear it up, Clare said. Did your concern begin before or after Mrs. Brooks refused the seat exchange. Richard exhaled. I noticed things during boarding.

What things? I already told you. She looked confused. She had trouble with her luggage.

Marcus remained several rows away. Clare looked toward him. You said you witnessed the luggage issue. Yes.

Richard immediately shook his head. He saw part of it. Marcus nodded. I did, and I'll only tell you the part I saw.

Clare gestured for him to continue. Marcus looked toward the overhead compartment above Evelyn. Mrs. Brooks had a small dark carry-on with a blue ribbon tied around the handle. Near the aircraft door, a crew member moved it aside for a moment so another passenger could get through with a larger bag.

Evelyn nodded. That's exactly what happened. Clare asked Marcus. Did she reach for someone else's luggage?

No. Did she appear unable to recognize her own bag? No. Richard folded his arms.

That isn't what I saw. Marcus looked at him. What did you see? I saw her reaching around like she didn't know which bag was hers.

Evelyn's expression tightened. I reached for my bag after it had been moved. Clare looked at Richard. Did you check whether the bag she reached for belonged to her?

No. Then we can verify that now. Clare turned to Evelyn. Mrs. Brooks, is your carry-on in the overhead bin?

Yes. May I look? Of course. Clare opened the compartment.

Several bags were packed inside. One small dark carry-on had a blue ribbon tied around its handle. Clare pointed to it. That one?

Evelyn nodded. Yes, Marcus said. That's the bag I saw. Clare closed the compartment.

All right, that resolves the luggage issue. Richard gave a frustrated sigh. It resolves where the bag is now. Marcus looked at him.

It's the same bag. Richard ignored him. I'm telling you, she was confused before any of this happened. Clare turned back to him.
